People would invite me to their homes and offer tea, fruit, food.
When I mentioned I was researching ancient sites, they were thrilled. I'm an archaeologist. Also the security forces were really kind to me.
They looked after me. Helped me find routes, advised me on directions etc.
Iranian culture is wonderful. There was a lot of dislike expressed towards the Arabs. Iranians really don't like Arabs.
There are Jewish and Christian communities there that are protected by law. You won't find that in Arab countries.

I went to college with some Iranians, but they were all Sephardic Jews whose families GTFO'd when the Shah was removed. I'm speaking ethnically in this instance, of course (me, as a Punjabi). Us, Hazras, Balochis, Pashtos, even Uzbeks/Tajiks - we're part of the broader Iranian cultural sphere. A majority of the population is either non-religious, or "Muslim" in the same way that many Americans are "Christian". The young generation in particular are pretty much all outright atheists (at least in the most liberal city). Things are different in rural villages, which are basically Afghanistan, which was part of Iran until a couple of centuries ago.
Even moreso than the lack of religion, the Iranian people love America, including the religious ones. (I should mention: there are plenty of devout Muslims there who are completely opposed to the government). Anything to do with America/Americans is high status.
One thing I thought was pretty telling was that when the Saudis executed that Shiite cleric Nimr for peaceful protests, I was thinking "ugh, worst country in the world strikes again, poor guy"..... but (at least in the most liberal city) there was some significant fraction of the population reacting with "the only good cleric is a dead cleric".
Basically, it's really tragic that the government are such shitheads. If they just stopped existing, Iran would be significantly less Islamist than Turkey, and a much better ally. Certainly a much better ally than Saudi Arabia, where it's the people themselves who are the problem.
