Didn't see any Turks in comment, wanted to clear things up.

Erdogan called everyone out to the streets even though the army warned not to. Azans stating that this is a holy war, second independence war, Islam should be defended have been recited.

Army is very violent in Ankara. Many civilians have been shot (99% Erdogan supporters). Parliament was still under bombardment until 20 minutes ago (couldn't get any info since). Army had captured many important television channels but not all.

Istanbul is a little less violent. Bridges and Ataturk Airport is still under army control. Soldiers do not hesitate to drive over a couple persons who stand in front of tanks (to protest).

Parliament and police stations have been under heavy fire by airforce, mainly in Ankara by helicopters. Some have been shot down. Many soldiers were caught/surrendered in Istanbul.

The coup is mainly by the Air Force and Gendarmarie. Some land forces are strongly against it while many are inbetween. The fight until now has been between the police and coup, therefore small in size. If the land forces choose Erdogan's side it may get ugly, up to a full scale war for a short while. If some of them choose the coup's side, it will most likely succeed in several hours.

I will try to keep this thread up to date. It is not over yet.

Pic related, Parliament.

I wonder if this will succeed. I have my doubts that it will. It seems like there are enough people now who want an Islamic state to support Erdogan.

Fuck, how did Ataturk manage to secularize the country? I just can't even imagine doing that today.

I'd say they have around 35-40% of public's support.

Cannot say anything about their power. They are not flying too many aircrafts but several of them have been touring/bombarding Istanbul and Ankara for 6 hours. If that means they have full grip on airspace, that's huge. Their landforces are limited and have lost tanks in Istanbul. Most of army is nowhere near the field right now, this day is either the end or the beginning.

Turkey has 5 million Syrians, I bet 100,000 of them are ISIS terrorists/supporters. If a civil war happens hell will break loose and the country will implode. Worse than Syria imho.

Why didn't support for the coup spread among the military more quickly? Is it because Erdogan was able to broadcast his message before television was shut down?

No, tv was barely shot down. Like for 1 hour at most. This was a huge reason coup has failed so far. Erdogan has been fighting the army for years. He has "cleared" it, prisoned many (the Ergenekon and Balyoz cases) and put his man to important positions. That is why it has been so small. The navy seems pro-coup so far but nothing has been done so far.

>>81260550
Ankara is calmer but still fights are going on. Mugla is also a big conflict zone, especially Marmaris.

>>81260835
I agree but we cannot do anything for it. The army simply has told people to stay away and you'll be lynched in a minute if you gather people to support it. There are 400,000 cops in Turkey (the number was 60,000 before Erdogan) who are his loyal dogs.

>>81261588
I don't think a civil war will happen. If coup fails, Erdogan gains all the sympathy, becomes the democracy hero and advances to presidency. There were many important things about him recently, all those will be forgotten. The syrian refugee issue, him not being a uni graduate thing, PKK thing... All forgotten
>>
>>81257699

I think I understand the idea of asking the people to go out into the streets to protest. The military having the coupe, they were not interested in hurting civilians, Erdogan knew this. So by asking the people to rally behind him and flood the street, the military was put into a difficult position.

From what I am seeing now, with the military surrendering and laying down arms, possibly against orders. The civilians are picking up the arms and where it goes from there, no one can be sure but I believe it won't be good for anyone in the long run.

Is it possible that the government used civilians as human shields against the military coupe?

Kurds can't achieve that with brute force. All the military power they have is only useful in guerilla warfare. They once claimed a small province this year and got steamrolled by the army. Lost like 4k men I guess.

Turkish military is in charge of defending a secular and democratic state.
Whenever a leader in the past has exceeded their power the military had stepped in and overthrown them. Also the military have a particular disdain for Islam.
Erdogan was prime minister, and president was a ceremonial seat. While pme minister he started giving the presidential position a lot of extra powers.
Erdogan became president and suddenly has all these powers he gave himself.
Erdogan rallies the Islamic fundamentalism by disguising his revival of Islam as "religious freedom"
He realizes military Wil have a coup so quickly arrests and replaces military leaders.
Last night a large enough faction still opposed to Islamic rule and Erdogan managed to enact a half passed plan to take power away from Erdogan.
Could be a false flag from Erdogan though to give himself even more control.
Pro coup forces mostly winning in ankara but anti coup forces mostly winning in istanbul.
Military urging people to stay inside and if they did this would be over.
King roach Erdogan claims he is willing to die as he flies away from the country and urges radical Islam nutjob followers to fight the military.
Military do not want to kill civilians and so are overwhelmed in some places.

Coup still going on with both sides claiming victory in the hopes the other side will just give up.

Coup needs to succeed or turkey turns into iran.

PKK have """engaged""" ISIS briefly, but their main target is Turkey, they are separatists who want to create a new Kurdistan.

There are many different groups of Kurds, the ones doing the majority of the fighting are Iraqi Kurds that have nothing to do with the PKK.

The PKK have killed way more Turkish civilians than anything else.

Edrogan is the one with Islamist tendencies, and the one allegedly supporting ISIS. Not all Turks agree with him as should be evident to you by the fucking civil war being fought right now to depose him.

Try actually doing some research for once.

>Tfw Islam ruins another country

When will the taint of Islam be removed from the world forever?
>>
>>81266035
I didn't say that, I'm simply saying that there's no real "good guy" between ISIS and the PKK.
>>
>>81265615

PKK is fighting Turks, but it has affiliates across the border in Syria who are fighting ISIS, Al Nusrats, and occasionally Assad. Turkey is covertly funding all the worst Islamists (and buying oil from ISIS), and so is supporting anti-Kurd factions. They also have engaged in heavy bombings of Kurdish positions in Syria, and have sent troops into Iraq to intimidate the Kurds there as part of their war against the PKK. So if anything, Turks love ISIS more than they love Based Kurdistan. By a lot.

I left the house shortly after the coupe began. I had to go to gun show. I stopped by my parents house after the gun show, to take politics/current events with my father.

He was watching the news, which was airing info about the coupe. He was drinking a cup of coffee in the dim living room. My mother went to sleep hours ago. He had the radio playing low in the background. He was listening to Tony Bennett's "If I Ruled The World," and he looked at me and his expression was more serious than I've ever seen in my life. He told me he felt like this was the beginning of the end of the world. He didn't talk much, just kept watching the news.

I just have the eerie feeling now, anon. Like he was right.

Here's "If I Ruled The World," if anyone wants to experience a weird feeling of sadness/eeriness:

My family in Turkey are from Mosul Iraq. They had it pretty bad. For starters we're Assyrian. First people targeted. For the ignorant we're also Christian.

My cousin was in his final year of petroleum enginering but had to drop out. They just got their immigration papers accepted by Canada.

The only people raping anything is the US towards Iraq. Keep in mind not one person during 9/11 was Iraqi.
