Germany invaded Russia in the summertime. In fact, the timing of the invasion was damn near perfect. The problems arose when they overestimated their winning streak and started to dick around in stalingrad which took up valuable time. Hitler was a fucktard for trying to take "Stalin's City" and the time lost meant that the soviets could move their industry east as well as put those gulags to work providing raw materials. Lend Lease also helped prevent russia from sinking completely. Mostly, it was penal battalions and half drunken slavs (due to lack of vodka) numbering in the millions basically zerg rushing an underequipped Germany that won them the day.

Stalingrad controls the volga river basin and was essential to cover the german rear once they pushed into the caucus. It's also a transportation hub connecting caucus oil to the rest of russia. This was also in the summer of 42, months after the failure of barbarossa at moscow.

If Stalingrad has fallen, the Germans could have moved north with the Volga covering their right side, creating a new front that would have cut off Moscow and slice the USSR in half forcing the red army troops to retreat into the urals. While not necessarily leading to the fall of the soviet union it would effectively have meant a german tactical victory

Germany destroyed some 2/3 of the Red Army in the field and still it did not colapse.
It was an incredible epic struggle.
The battle for Stalingrad alone saw a million casualties.

USSR had a massive number of conscripts that they forced into combat, but "human wave" is a meme. Even in the early stages of the war Ivan was using tanks and had their infamous Guard Units.
By the time the momentum was reversed and the Reich pushed out of Stalingrad, they were using combined arms warfare as effectively as the Germans with a professional, well equipped army.
