On my phone so I don't want to go to the sticky and crash my browser. Can someone give me a tl;dr of what's going down? Did Turkey decide to go full Allah akbar?

The opposite desu
The Turkish military is overthrowing the old Islamic regime

OP here. I'm just posting pictures from the Gezi Park protests. I was in Turkey when it happened, hoping Erdogan is gone for good now.
Nobody has too much info. I've tried talking to my friends in Istanbul and they're even more in the dark than me. Military is staging a coup in Istanbul and Ankara. I've heard via WhatsApp that they've disarmed guards at the Presidential Palace and detained a top pro-Erdogan general, but that could be heresy at this point.

Gotcha. I only heard about it because an American girl I know was teaching there but just so happened to be back in the states for a vacation and got her return flight was canceled within the last hour or so. Lucky broad.
How was the food?

Amazing.

Ironically, my boss is a Georgian Turk and is going to Turkey to meet his fiancee in a week or two. Wonder if he's still going to be able to make it.

>The Turkish military is overthrowing the old Islamic regime
Oh fucking kek
Do you know any more details ?

Tweets and other social media sources are indicating that a state-run, pro-AKP media station has been taken over by soldiers and that there are shots outside of the Presidential Palace.

I was in Turkey last year I just call my friends in Istanbul, IT'S HAPPENING !!

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Turkey almost all Muslims

So when you say the Army is throwing out the old Islamic regime is this a fight between Sunni and Shiite Muslims ?

You are correct.
However, your assumption about the nature of Turkey is slightly off. When the modern Republic of Turkey was founded shortly after the end of World War I, the constitution which is still in used or which has inspired the present constitution advocated for principles of secularism in government, education, and the judiciary. Ataturk was a bit of a dictator, but his reforms boosted literary in the country from about 10% to almost universal literacy today. He also briefly outlawed hijab and other religious dress in courts.
When I was in Turkey during the Gezi Park protests, I talked to a lot of people. The Turkish military is not sworn to defend the PM and president but is sworn (or was, before Erdogan changed it) to defend the Turkish constitution and uphold its secular values.
The Turkish military has a history of coups when they feel the government is becoming too authoritarian or theocratic.
Unfortunately, a lot of Turks are pro-AKP and pro-Erdogan. Hopefully the military can crush this nigger and restore Turkey back to its place as a halfway civilized, secular country.

Ok so basically Erdogan has become too corrupt and authoritarian in his ways and he's just getting thrown out for it. Thanks for the info anon.
>>81190210
Pretty much.
Of course, nobody knows exactly what might happen - especially if this coup fails.

Seems like Erdogan was denied permission to land in Istanbul and is trying to seek asylum in Germany.
