VP's have no power in office but they can tank a campaign to get there which is why it's such a big issue.
Whoever you pick as a VP multiplies any problems or controversies to your platform. Trump has the weight of being called racist, sexist, and unqualified on his shoulders. If he picks somebody who reaffirms those accusations(which otherwise had no evidence), it could seriously hurt him and steer away anybody on the fence who are an extremely important demographic right now. Bernie sent off millions of Clinton hating voters who would vote for Trump if he would prove that he isn't as bad as the media says he is, but if he picks anybody on his shortlist he's just going to confirm Trump's negative connotations and potentially send them right back to Clinton.
He might still win with Pence or Newt and I'm still going to vote for him and support him, but it would be a lot easier to snatch victory if he picked literally anybody else. My fingers are crossed for Flynn or a surprise Rand.
