I recall being told at one point that when we were at war with Germany, the German people literally shoved their heritage and traditions in the closet and became "Americans" instead of "German Americans."
"Frankfurters" became hot dogs, etc.
And over the years, vestiges of German heritage or traditions just went away. I heard all this from relatives from Michigan. I was told there used to be a lot of German influence in the state (and Scandinavian in the upper peninsula, esp. Finnish?). Nowadays, there is a lot less, but a couple stores and restaurants.
Now compare this to today, where everyone (who isnt white) can brazenly flout and demand respect/special conditions to meet their specific culture. These people are arrogantly proud of it too!
