I have been wondering about a more specific aspect of it:

Well "southern Korea" and "northern Korea" are one nation. If there was no government in northern Korea then according to the Republic of Korea (southern Korean) constitution all of northern Korea would fall under the command of Seoul.
So let's say there's a coup, led by some ambitious General maybe, to dispose the Kim dynasty and kickstart a military dictatorship with economic reforms similar to that in China. You can't have those reforms without opening up your country to travel and investment and thus severely liberalizing the free flow of movement and information. The Chinese won't even go as far as they did in 1950. They'll provide material support, but that's the extent of it. The Chinese are riding high on an era of bubble economy prosperity, and won't risk that over a failed state.
If we decide to bring down the Norks, they'll be all by their lonesome. But that won't happen because they don't have any strategic resources that relate to our interests.

This is not true, Norks have some of the most extensive deposits of rare earth metal on the planet, but their ability to access them is limited because they're in the dark ages for the most part. What little they manage to extract is the price they pay to china for the military support and weapons.

The costs of bringing them up to speed with South Korea, which would largely be demanded by libs on all sides immediately if the North Korean regime fell, would be enormous. Germany still has to bring the east up to speed with the rest of the country today, decades after the fall of the Berlin wall. Also, the differences weren't as stark as East and West Germany as they are between North and South Korea, let alone the fact that North Korea has about half the population of South Korea, while East Germany had only roughly a quarter I believe.
Also, when the regime falls, there is going to be a yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge refugee problem, as millions seek to go into South Korea immediately, or into China. There will be disenfranchised masses, some of whom are already disgusted by the South due to decades of indoctrination, while those that somehow rejected it will be disgusted by what South Korea truly looks like. Ever watch pop music videos without the sound on? It is horrific to observe, and that is how many North Koreans will see the South, as a fake, culturally degraded cesspool of degeneracy. Then there's also the fact that South Koreans will also despise the fact that they have to pay to bring the North up to speed, after decades of being on war footing and the occasional sporadic attack.
Plus, it gives the US a reason to remain on the Korean peninsula, while it also gives China a dependent little ally which can serve to check the US there (they still don't like the North Koreans though) and also the fear that a united Korea could mean a pro-US one, as the Northern population comes to learn how much the Chinese propped up the former regime.

There's no reliable statistics published by the DPRK but judging from the accounts of people who lived in the country, petty crime has become very common after the mid-1990s but the murder rate was surprisingly low, even during the famine of mid to late 90s. When people get drunk, people's inner bent-up stress, frustrations and anger from dire and strict living conditions can lead to fist fights among men, but fist fights among men aren't really anything spectacular in any country.
