The areas where they heavily grow crops in SoCal are more towards the Venture and Santa Barbara areas, and parts of Los Angeles and surrounding areas where development hasn't taken over. The drought it hurting though and we are taking water from other states to cover it. This isn't counting citrus farms in SoCal that grow just by looking at the trees.
The best way to describe why California is #1 in Agriculture, especially in fruits and veggies, is the soil. You need to add very little, if anything at all, amendment or fertilizer wise to produce the best goddamn fruit or veggie you can. And gotta remember majority of the Ag is in San Joaquin Valley/central california, not Socal.
Also: After going to a water-use seminar at a nearby college, was able to find out a massive water drain in California is Palm Springs. One of the hottest and dryest places on Earth but it is bypassing alot of the drought regulations to maintain the golf courses and various other greenery in the area.
