This is not what actual believers do though. I'm always a little bit surprised when I see this meme come up because it reveals a fundamental inability to understand faith. The only people in a Christian congregation who go through the motions because of being afraid of hell are those who do not really believe. I think it's not uncommon with children who receive a heavily religious upbringing. Few children have an inside-out feel for faith so they are more prone to fear of hell rather than having their heart in fire for God. The conversion of the heart usually happens later as the person matures, although I'm sure there are some special kids who just have it from an early age. Also, in my opinion, reminding lapsed Christians of hell is more about getting them to consider faith rather than coercing them to go through the motions with no faith.

The only thing that can overcome years of programming is "waking up". A person has to be perceptive, open minded, and intelligent enough to look at the reality around them and compare it to their "programmed" responses.
