For christs sake Ted Kennedy almost beat Jimmy Carter in 1980 for the nomination, that alone showed that the realignment of the parties throughout the 70s had taken full effect.
By 1986 everyone knew that the democrats were the fiscal AND socially liberal party. They kept Robert Byrd around and made him apologize to hold onto a few southerners here and there but they never returned to the old days.
