What are the legitimate functions of a government according to a conservative?
>>
>>80902350
Judicial, Executive, and Legislative.
>>
To do less.
>>
>>80902508
I wasn't asking what the branches of government are. I guess I should have said role of the government.

What are some cases where the government is entitled to your money? (only equality tax)

Or maybe the phrase it another way: Do you think there are (only legitimate) services of government where the citizenry is obligated to pay for?
>>
>>80902350
The state serves to promote good. To raise people to do good. This is the classical stance of Aristotle. And it's hard to say precisely what is good unless you refer to religion. So the state should raise its people in virtue and in christian faith. These are its basic tasks

Then also you have things like protecting the consumer in relations with big companies, imposing environmental restrictions, providing labor laws (collective bargaining, easy process of creating a labor union etc.) and then maybe providing public services, but so far this is rekting budgets of european countries, so I don't know how long will this be possible
>>
>>80903152
No, there is speration of church and state

The purpose of government is to protect the country and keep order
>>
>>80903088
Citizens should pay for
>police
>military
>fire service and paramedics
>basic infrastructure (roads and lights)
That's it. No welfare, no Obamacare, no MPs 3rd beach house
>>
>>80903291
>separation of church and state
Not everywhere is the US. I'd quite welcome the reunion of church and state tbqh famalam
>>
>>80902350
People have rights innately, not at the pleasure of any other.
A legitimate government recognizes this and other natural limitations, and its function is to preserve those rights.
This is what separately a legitimate government from any other accident of circumstance.

Personally? No not really.

If there is a demand for a thing then the market can satisfy the demand for it, having the state interfere will just lead to inefficiency and confusion.

That said, perhaps border control would have to be the responsibility of the state but it's a complex question.

I'd recommend Hoppe's 'Democracy; the God that Failed' for this kind of topic.
>>
>>80903291
>No, there is speration of church and state
There has always been, church always existed as a separate administrative entity

The separation of church and state doesn't mean that the state shouldn't recognize what is the leading morality in the state. This idea of a secular, neutral state is nonsense. Only some muslim countries and Israel have the guts to openly state which religion leads their country

In Poland religions are officially equal, but the Catholic Church gets a bigger funding and is in general privileged in some areas
>>
>>80903152
>So the state should raise its people in Christian faith

Leave it to a stinky faggot ass pollack to try and force his beliefs on the people around him.

No wonder the Ruskies treated you like shit

Protection from others. IE, Military, Police, Laws, and property.

Thats why conservatives pass shit like the Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air act.

We just don't give a shit about protecting you from yourself.

The only legitimate functions of a government are to provide the public with services that they otherwise would not be entitled to. There is no other justifiable function of government whatsoever.
>>
>>80903580
No offense but this seems extremely naive to me. Believing rights are God-given or inherent in Men as if everyone is entitled to them. It's Liberal talk, believing everyone is entitled to something in virtue of being born instead of the constant vigilance of the people in upholding these rights.

>>80904696
Rights aren't natural. They are man-made. Is there something I'm missing here?
>>
>>80904937
A natural right is something you have if nobody interferes with your ability to take it. A more popular term would be "negative liberty"

The role of a government should be to protect its people, the question as to how far should be answered by the people it protects.

>>
There are 5 main functions that it is proper for the government to fulfil:
1. To stop gays from marring
2. To educate children and instil thy word of the lord in their minds
3. To bomb brown people
4. To destroy the lies of the fossil "record"
5. To shoot marijuana users in the streets

So, the government takes it power from the people. By that definition, people can't give something they don't possess. One legitimate case would be self-defense. Does that mean and I say this with no animosity in case you think there is, the nation building efforts of the US are largely unconstitutional?
>>
>>80904937
>They are man-made
They are man-made only as a formal conclusion of "finding" them among the natural law. So when somebody passes a bill in which it is written that murder is prohibited, it's only a formal conclusion of the acknowledgement that a certain person has a natural, God given right to life

Philosophy => law
>>
>>80905431
Almost everything the American government does is unconstitutional.

infrastructure.

Keep in mind that people love to make the "muh roads" argument but infrastructure only accounts for a tiny little sliver of our spending. The vast majority is spent on welfarenigger benefits and such. And that shit has got to go. I'm not against taxes no matter what, but I'm against what we have now
>>
>>80905562
>>80905506

What if those functions were to be privatized instead? That's largely happening with these PMCs and postal services anyway. Is that unconstitutional?

conservative here.
The legitimate functions of the government include, but are not limited to: building and maintaining public infrastructure, providing transportation, the military, providing and regulating healthcare, providing and regulating education, law creation and enforcement, redistribution of wealth, owning the means of production, etc.

that's it

some people throw in diplomacy (i'm one of them) but others say there's too much potential for shenanigans

of course, you said government, you really meant, "the state"

the government runs the state and the legislature makes new rules for the police/justice to enforce. don't forget about that piece

Seriously though, the US government does all of those things (except for outright owning the means of production) and I see constant reference to the US being the "most conservative" and "most right wing" first world nation.
What the fuck is the rest of the world doing?
