Interstellar travel is probably impossible. You can't go any appreciable fraction of the speed of light without all dust particles acting like mini nukes, ftl is quackery, and no civilization will ever be disciplined and organized enough to live multiple generations on an extremely slow moving ship for thousands to millions of years. It's not a matter of development but the fundamental limits of the laws of physics. It's amazing how so many shitty ideas find their way into pop-sci without anyone really knowing what these ideas are and how the math works. The EM Drive isn't an FTL drive and just uses EM waves in a funny way to achieve thrust. It would be no more useful for interstellar travel than anything else we have and would still take millennia to go anywhere interesting if it's possible at all. The other major concept is the Alcubierre Drive but its own author admits that it's just a thought experiment. He solved the Einstein Field Equations backwards by choosing the spacetime he wanted (the warp field thing) and then worked out the SE tensor. It apparently requires more mass energy than exists in the universe and the number is negative, which is nonsense. Wormholes have similar problems.
Also, it's not mentioned often in the books but the fishy navigators do in fact use a form of FTL. They warp space or something using the spice.

I do recognise that there are still hard limits enforced by the laws of physics, but they are just that - laws. And somewhere, they have a loophole.
