Afghanistan was a target for multiple reasons the most pressing were the proposed Iran pipeline allowing cheap export to the west which is a threat to Turkish and Israeli current monopoly (also what Syria is immediately about right now) as well as access to the Poppy feilds which the CIA uses to fund black operations and proxy warfare.
