I say "claiming" because in real life it is clearly obvious this is not what they want but they're happy to admit it in social media and opinion articles.
The reasons I can think of are:

Possibly it's hard to say at this point. I think a lot of this is driven by a backlash against high standards to begin with, it's no secret that when women rate mens attractiveness that 80% of men are rated "below average" which is mathematically impossible for starters.
And with women being ever more successful in work and not needing the providing and protecting from men that traditional in small clans would have been the primary role, women are pricing themselves out of the market, these higher value women find it hard to find men to reciprocate their value, and that leaves the top 20% of men generally sleeping around and getting their fill but not actually settling down into relationships which leave the women unsatisfied. And it leaves many of the middle of the road average Joe men screwed and giving up and writing off women as too much hassle.
Once you've abandoned the thought of LTRs which many of these men do, and I've done as a MGTOW, it's easy to let yourself go, despite having an amazing career and plenty of money, I dress in the same tatty jumper most days and remain unshaven, let my hair grow long and put on loads of weight - because why take care of yourself when women aren't worth the effort.
