Something about this all makes me uncomfortable. Is anyone else feeling this?
A company is getting access to photos and location information of everything a person is doing and it can be used to herd groups of people into specific locations whenever it wants.

My friends are calling me paranoid and are saying "its just a game" but to me it seems like scary technology under the guise of a colourful, popular, kids game.
>>

Data mining is not new.

Portable cameras are not new.
>>
If you honestly think the government or other organizations (private or otherwise) needs apps like these to view your phone camera/GPS location, you are a bigger idiot than the rest of them
>>
>>80829966
The government would never do that. It's illegal.
>>
>>80829966
They also get full access to your gmail account; can read any and every email.

And they can turn around and sell that information to other companies if they feel like it.

As well, if they're bought out by another company, that company gets all the info too.

It is spyware masquerading as a kids game.

The NSA and feds don't need an app to do that. They've been doing it. Google's been doing it. Every time you access the internet you're giving away information.

I do think some kid's going to get shot or mugged at some point because of this game though. There will be a death because of this game.

It's made by an associated company of Google.
Of course it's being used to data mine.
Just like every other tech device is.
Nothing new.
Sell that data to companies and make even more money.

double dubs don't lie.

Literally anything involving a phone with a GPS is automatically subject to a great deal of suspicion, and with good reason.

Of course, I trust Nintendo to be genuinely interested in nothing more than making money and making children's games, but the people that run the show as far as apps and your phone go? I wouldn't put it past them to pull some shit.

Just carry on as usual and give people weird looks when they play it and they'll eventually get that it's a little unnerving.

It's really ingenious whoever thought of this shit. Get millions of people out taking pictures of places you are interested in mapping, then use captchas to disseminate the pictures for free.

I was excited when I first heard of it but when I found out its all pay to win with no leveling I lost all interest. I don't get the whole craze if people are just in walking around collecting pokemon if you can't trade/battle other people with them. I thought this game was not yet out in Germany, but yesterday while waiting at the bus stop, I saw four nerds smurfing down the sidewalk, heads over their smartphones. They got all excited and jumped up and down next to an empty bush nearby. "YES! YES! I'VE GOT IT!" Then they wandered onto the street without checking for traffic, heads still over their phones. It was their luck that the bus was 2 minutes late, or they'd have been under it.

The lures can only be dropped on Poke-stops. Just avoid the ones that are in dark / shady places at odd hours.

> Scary Tech
The reports and photos of unlimited access were "only a bug" according to the developer. Only reason it's believable is that is only happened on iOS phones, android users never had to give up that much info upon download.

On top of this, there were many fake programs with backdoor's and malware released. Since the game debuted in some countries first it gave people in other countries a chance to fake it and rush it out so all the kids that couldn't wait for it downloaded the fake virus.

It's not bad, it's just a game.

Yes they most likely will sell the information they can get to Geo-spatial government agencies, but that will help our Military. :^)

It's all staged, nobody gave a fuck about Pokemon, but when the media said 'it's cool, EVERYBODY loves it', now they do.
They're beta testing their augmented reality shit, and seeing just how far they can manipulate people into doing things with it.
They're seeing if and how many people will accept it as their new reality and chase the nonexistent creatures as if they're real because on a subconscious level these people are actually accepting it as real, making them prone to suggestion, and valuable data can be extracted, especially now that most new smartphones have cameras on both sides.
When the more advanced shit comes out (which has been waiting in the wings for some time) they'll use the data gathered in this experiment to their advantage, using it against the population.

To be honest, it's fucking frightening how this shit just appeared overnight.

What the fuck is Pokemon Go, and why is every news outlet and every goddamn internet forum Suddenly talking about it?

It's some concentrated something, and I don't trust it. Feels forced.
>>
>>80829966
It may be a psy op or something but what bugs me the most is normies nutting over a game where you do absolutely nothing. My friends are all losing their shit over it and I said 'show me a battle' to which they laughed and said 'you don't actually fight them anon'. What's the fucking point? Spinning pictures of places clicking on areas and moving your finger in a straight line to throw the ball, it's retarded as fuck
>>
>>80845836
yea i get that it's not trying to get you to buy shit now. just saying that once a game like this is fully realized i wouldnt be surprised if it takes you somewhere and then offers you an incentive to buy something in the real world. if pokemon doesnt do it some other game will.

There's combat and levelling, but it's very barebones seeing as how there's only 2 moves per pokemon and only one stat. You conquer ''gyms'' that appear in random locations and fight other people who come to claim it.

>implying i think blasting people with commercials for 20 minutes for every hour of television is ethical

havent owned a tv for over 10 years now. whenever i visit my parents im slightly horrified at the amount of commercials people are taking in from television. it's total mind control shit. people even brag about how they, "only watch the superbowl for the commercials" like watching football is somehow more brain dead than begging for more commercials.

The potential for malicious exploits is tremendous but this game have literally brought people together and gotten Americans moving and interacting again.

Yesterday I went to a heritage park in my town. I had not visited in a few years and the place was mostly ignored. Now there is 60-80ish people there walking the entire area. They are all chatting with each other and sharing their pokemon captures. Random people who would never look twice at each other are having conversations and sharing a common interest. Fathers and Mothers are with their children out hunting for Pokemon, kids excited as I was when I was their age to see a Pikachu.

The way the egg incubators work they are basically a pedometer incentive and pokestops refresh in such a manner that if you walk half a mile you can complete another circuit all over again.

Pokemon GO is getting people out of their houses and moving and interacting with other human beings face to face again. It actually is pretty fucking amazing to see.
>>
>>80829966

I just installed this and I noticed what it was asking for. I assume it has a camera in game so it needs your camera and your media in order to take and store the pictures.

I was actually googling for a way around it.

I refused to sign in with google and there is a waiting list to make a independent account with their pokemon shit.

If this keeps up people will grow a lot more interested towards Augmented Reality games, devices and applications.
Microsoft is already doing some pretty darn good job with their Augmented reality helmet hololens and while the price is still out of reach of the average consumer that will change in due time.

People love Pokemon. The first genners are all now 24-35ish and like the feeling of catching pokemon like they did in the beginning. There is no mystery here. Pokemon has been milking us for money for the better part of 2 decades. Now they made it so people have to actually move and gather in specific locations to play. Lots of people with a common interest share that interest.

It isn't rocket surgery. It is just pretty surprising how hard it has taken off. If they add a real battle system so it isn't just flicking balls and praying. Or so you can battle anyone you meet without having to use the gym. This game will surpass the GNP of a few 3rd world nations.

>>
I don't think it has an ulterior motive or anything of the sort, but I do think it shows something very sinister.

It shows how entertainment can literally dictate where people go and what they do in a much simpler way. It shows how the internet can create alternate realities.

I'm saying Pokemon GO isn't about controlling us, but it's a breakthrough of creating an alternate reality under the control of someone.

It is scary.

That said, Windows 10 was a far, far scarier thing in terms of data mining.

I keep hearing this shit. I just tell everyone I hear talking about this crap that if they have a Facebook account and the app on their phone then they're giving far more away than some silly Pokemon game. Usually they look at you like an idiot, not understanding.

Pokemon go, is like any other app. It's going to take data about you. It just is. Research the company, check the app and see which permissions you can block without breaking it's functionality, etc. At least they're not working directly with govts like Facebook, Google, Apple, etc.
>>

It's like when Windows 10 released and everyone was crying, like that Microsoft was saving your passwords... for Microsoft products.

As a faggot that likes his retro games, I'm a fan of Nintendo. A big question I have here is why did Nintendo allow one of their biggest franchises to be used by Niantic? Nintendo is notoriously stubborn and known for viciously pursuing anybody that uses their Intellectual Properties without authorization. This is a bit too strange Nintendo allowed this to happen, especially when it seems they have been resisting selling out their video games to shit tier cell phone material.

Where is Nintendo's involvement in all this, or Game Freak? I feel if we dig deeper into this we may get some more useful information.

Pokemon is not entirely owned by Nintendo, which is why Game Freak, who also aren't owned by them, can do whatever they want since they have part of the IP's ownership, like put Pokemon apps on phones. I remember my friend having a pokedex app years ago.

Even then, Nintendo is moving into mobile territory as of late, it's no surprise that they'd hire a third party, they do that a lot for their games since the SNES era.

The gov. can already get your info. As for data mining, all websites are doing that already.

Also if you leave the wireless thing on on your smartphone there's new tech companies install in stores to detect your movement. They want that that data. I've stepped into some service hallways in malls and seen metal boxes on the walls with Ethernet cords with the word "people counter" written on it. I wonder if they've got censors in the building checking for wireless cell signals. There was something in the news about privacy concern from those technologies a year or two ago.
>>
>>80829966
>Oh no! Google has access to my gmail account

>>
>>80829966
... only when running the game.

Your mobile internet provider has already your position 24/7 and so your government while your phone is on.
You have mobile data in every new car. Just for automatically calling emergency services of course.
With the new eSIM standard you will get a lot more devices mobile internet enabled, some you will not even know that they are.

And you complain about a game?
And just think about it. Who cares about you?
