First of all, you're wrong. 7 of the 10 oldest buildings in the world are in northern Europe. Some are 2000 years older than the pyramids.
Second, the north was "civilized" later than the south because of the climate. The Mediterranean had larger populations and more advanced civilizations because it was easier to live there, easier to farm the land, there were longer farming seasons and the winter was easier to survive. You'll notice that most early civilizations are found along the same latitude.
It was only when society and technology evolved to the point that man could tame nature and produce large enough yields from farming to sustain a sizable population that the north thrived. This started in the early middle ages in central and western Europe and moved north as the centuries passed. Life was still tougher in the north than in the south, and this resulted in the north evolving a hardy, inventive and creative people.
