The purpose was to stop the growth of Islam invading Europe and other parts of Christendom.

And it worked quite well until recently

The Popes wanted to solidify their secular power over plebs. They used faith to justify incursions into infidel lands, which were unifying Catholics not behind the developing notion of National pride, but a religious one. They also served to spread Christianity by the sword
When the disasters of the 14th-17th century hit, people became less religious and started to distrust the Church and the Popes had no choice to stop crusading so that they could keep the little influence they had

Not really, though your desire to demonize the Papal authorities is a shame.

First crusade was a response to 400 years of Muslim oppression and expansion of formerly Christian lands. 2nd 3rd and 4th were purely political.

they showed the Muslims to not fuck with Europe. but the Byzantines fucked it up lost some battles and left the Catholics holding and unsupported outpost in the middle of nowhere. remember the Muslims only took land with a direct route back to land they controlled. Catholic knights flat out took took a kingdom in the center of the Muslims' shit excuse of an empire. It was all they could do to retake Jerusalem and after that it still took them decades to retake the coast.

while they did leave after the third crusade Christians started retaking land after Vienna that only stopped as a result of WW1 fucking up everyone's shit, WW2 leaving us with fucking commies to deal with, and the cold war ending leaving us all cucks. one day will get back to it.

I'm not demonizing the Popes lad. It's looking at the perspective from a purely rational point of view. I have no doubt that most popes genuinely believed they had been tasked by Christ to liberate Christians from Pagan opression and bring salvation to people who otherwise wouldn't know Catholicism.
But do remember that the Popes and the kings from the middle ages were involved in a permanent power struggle in which the aristocracy came out on top

Also, I'm sorry, but I can't watch that video right now. Could you give me a quick briefing on what it talks about?

Saracens blew up the twin cathedrals in Florence.

Pope Urban II was all like OMG THEYRE GONNA TAKE YOUR FREEDOMS!!

Bullshit, crusades stopped the spread of Islam for centuries.

Look at the expansion of Islam pre-crusade
Then compare it to what happened after the crusades

Crusades taught those Achmeds to fear the reaper

Then of course the turks happened. But the based russians dealt with them

>German education

which crusade stopped the spread of Islam? The First Crusade was launched to protect Byzantium from the Seljuks but by the time the Crusaders got to Anatolia they had already got control and Seljuks weren't even a threat. Then the Fourth Crusade burned Anatolia to the ground paving way for the Muslims to take Constantinople.

Muslims won most of the Crusades and it ended with them taking Constantinople and the Ottomans being the scourge of Christians for centuries to come

t. /r/atheism

Pope Urban II started the Crusades because the Byzantine emperor wanted military help

He also knew it would be a nice alternative way for the nobility of Europe to atone for their sins. The nobility knew all of their wealth and their constant warring wasn't very Christ like, so an "armed pilgrimage" combined what they were good at, with what they wanted

As for OP, no, the Crusades were not in vain. The Reconquista is called the "longest Crusade" by a lot of Iberians, and the Crusades spread Christianity to Northern and Eastern Europe

Muslims to this day fear the symbol of the crusaeder cross. A thousand years later and they still fear it and hate it.

Wars are just as much about psychological and ideological victory as they are about succesful military campaigns.

Without the crusades and people like Karl Martell, Europe would be living under sharia law already.
>>
>>80793413
Well, it certainly cemented the rift between the Byzantine Church and Rome.
>>
>>80793413
Europe gained access to trade from the Far East, and without being a faggot, Muslim philosophy did spark the Reneissance.

what is the Balkan Wars?
>>
The crusader states lasted for 100+ years. For the Kingdom of Jerusalem, it was almost 200 years (1099 to 1291). It's a mistake to think those things were a total failure.

>Stop the spread of Islam
>All of Europe would be a big fat Middle-East today without the crusades
>in vain
Only a Muhammad would see the crusades in vain.
