Completely depends on the anime. Some have legitimately impressive female characters who are strong and tough. None of them pander to the left or tumblr-cucks. Even the strong women are beautiful and feminine. (No "HURR im a dyke and I shaved my head but not my armpits or legs WOMYN POWER!)
The males can also vary depending on the show. If you watch some harem BS then yeah the male MCs can be beta but most of the time they're just fine.
