The price isn't too bad for Starbucks coffee.
The problem is that it is universally shitty coffee. In order to get it consistent, they burn the piss out of the beans. It makes them look neat, what with them being all black and shiny as fuck, but it ruins the coffee.
A dull, mud colored bean is better. The oil, the part that contains the caffeine, is still in the bean and gets into the drink better. A black shiny is bean is one that has been burned to the point that oil has escaped the bean and covered it. A good portion of the caffeine has been burned away at that point and the resulting drink is extremely bitter.
A smooth, light roast has more caffeine and is far tastier, but even Starbucks light roast coffee (their 'blonde') is considered at best medium-dark roast by most standards.
You want a coffee company that knows how to properly label and roast their beans? Eight O'clock coffee is the way to go for cheap, readily available, and a good standard for coffee.
