Very few people WANT to have to use their guns. I came close once and it gave me the shakes bad.
But that doesn't stop us from being boisterous about defending ourselves and family. On one hand this allows us to rationalize and get a grip on our fear of having to take someone's life. On another hand, it's an uncouth way to express our rights so we don't get cucked like you. And if the shit ever hit the fan, a drive through a nearby coon town is a reminder that you probably don't have enough ammo, and that you would need to get cozy with taking a life pretty quick.
Another facet is, what I think, is legit American culture; the ability to take out trash without being disenfranchised. Maybe it's pioneer culture still kicking in, but a lot of Americans are not patient. Criminals should be dealt with and a lot of us become disillusioned about justice when we hear of Tyrone the baby rapist, who has 6 break ins and 2 murders, taking 2 years to get to court and then he gets 10 years and parole for "good behavior."
Most of us would like the chance to Judge Dredd their asses for the betterment of the community.

I don't have any guns in my house at the moment, so I fantasize about slitting robbers throats.
Not a story about a gun, but do concealed carry the attached knife. I admit that I have only had to use it once in 8 years, but it did save my life. A large man tried to rob me on an empty bike path at 4 am 6 years ago. My fault for being out that late mind you, but why should anyone be afraid to go out at anytime. Man walked up to me and pulled a 3" knife, I then drew my 6" knife. He decided not to back down, I cut his at and stabbed him in the gut. I then ran. Never found out what happened to him, but considering it was 22 degrees out and he was cut and stabbed I don't think he made it.
I still have nightmares about that night, but still carry the knife. I now own a 410 gauge revolver that I keep locked in my bedroom. I have it in case, but dread the thought of using it.
Average police response time is 15-30 minutes, and oddly the time increases if they expect violence. Police are not here to protect us in my country, only to arrest someone after the fact. We have to protect ourselves. Since the Philippines have people that make perfect replicas of famous guns and ship them to the states and folks sell these illegal guns for under $1,000 you can't blame folks for trying to legally acquire similar weapons to defend themselves.
Cartels and gangs have access to these guns and are organized, and police take even longer to respond to suspected gang violence. If you were caught in the crossfire because your home just happened to be in front of the spot two gangs started shooting at each other in would you not want to actively defend yourself rather then Wai for a stray bullet to kill someone in your home?
This is an extreme case, but if the probability of this happening is above 0% that is unacceptable and I can see why folks do it.
