I was only in 5th grade when this came out. Never appreciated the message at the end until about 11th grade. By then any time I talked about it people thought that I was an edgy teenager. However that was a bit after the first iPhone came out and the effects of the smartphone generation couldn't be witnessed yet. I really saw the horror of isolated ponds during my sophomore year in college (10-11) when everyone and their grandma was glued to the screen of the their android or apple device. Really sad. Ironically Pokemon go is actually getting people up and out of the house to be social again. However you would have to be stupid to not realize that Google, who used to own Niantic, is just gathering more location data. Niantic and Google did announce though that the permissions the game requires when signed in with a Google account were excessive and unnecessary. They're changing it server side as much as they can before a client side fix.

This. There was so much anticipation for the game, people bought ZotE just to get the demo, which featured Snake and only Snake-- no Raiden. Then you start as Raiden, who instead of being this awesome, gruff, tough, seasoned hero like Snake, Raiden was, comparatively, a complete pussy. When Snake got fooled in MGS it felt genuinely surprising, when Raiden got fooled it felt like it's because he's a fucking moron-- I mean he has Solid Snake right in front of him and has no idea who this guy is, like he never got an intelligence briefing with a picture attached to it.
Then you get MGS3, which was more a return to form, and a much better game, but still not Solid Snake. Pretty much a better game all around except MGS2 had the better message, only it's delivery was very poor.
Then MGS4, finally we get Solid Snake back but they make him an old bastard for some reason (so they can have Liquid Ocelot on an even keel I suppose-- Liquid Ocelot being a retarded idea in the first place, thanks again MGS2). Otherwise a very good game with fan service that didn't feel like it pandered too much.
Finally MGS5. I played through the first part and that's it. I don't play games anymore these days and I borrowed this from a friend for the PS3 I have collecting dust. Yes and no. Kojima intended the game to be considerably longer, featuring Venom getting Sahelanthropus back and it becoming the Metal Gear from Metal Gear and Metal Gear Snake's Revenge. In fact it was going to recreate the ending of Snake's Revenge, where you realize (obviously) the man you killed wasn't Big Boss at all, but Venom. At least that was one intended route Kojima wanted to take, we'll never really know outside of what he says.
However, he implied it was somewhat intentional that players felt snubbed by the end, like they were expecting some big finale or lead-in to previous games, and instead got a somewhat unfinished series. Obviously players can assume what happened, but they wanted to play it themselves. It's kinda bullshit, but Kojima himself said he wanted Venom to "be the player"(which should have been your first clue), and that he wanted us to feel a "phantom" when we finished. He loves being Meta, and this game and 2 are the most "meta".
I felt disappointed, but enjoyed the actual gameplay so much that it kind of grew on me.
