There is nothing wrong with genetic engineering.
We've been doing it for tens of thousands of years, it's just that recently, we've started doing it more efficiently by directly inserting the DNA from one species into the cells of another to make it better in certain aspects. It's no different than selective breeding, except it takes less time, and it's more likely to give you the results you're looking for.
