the collapse of USSR and collapse of leftwing economic arguments. the left was infiltrated by/drifted towards liberal centerists. focus then became the bourgeoisie and the bullshit they worry about rather than issues of class.
This is something I've spent much time thinking about recently.
In my opinion the modern left is defined by two factors: 1) its belief in historical determinism (inherited from Marx, Hegel, Darwin) and the movement's own place therein and 2) cultural relativism.
The first has Modern leftists saying things like "the wrong side of history" and "its current year". They feel that history is a determined march in the direction they want--and like evolution it cannot be reversed and it is inevitable. The belief in this inevitability can be dangerous--think of the most radical leftists as enraptured by the dialectic as a Muslim suicide bomber. Lives can be sacrificed to some. Although Left has lost much of its edge over the past century. After May 68, the Left has been largely docile--as a violent approach failed. What of note has the Far Left done since?
And as they've softened, the commitment to Marxist economics (for the Proletariat!) that previously defined them has faded. Lets be honest, the Post-War Years were very good to the West and people's standards of living have greatly increased. In its place is of course Cultural Relativism. Cultural Relativism has effectively removed a sense of self-pride from the Left, and the institutions they control. O the days of Manifest Destiny are long gone! Rather than create, build, improve their own society--Leftists spend their energies decrying the evils of imperialism, slavery, genocide. They are committing self-flagellation for acts transpired generations before their time! Its madness! Its a culture that doesn't believe in its own will to power, and that is why it has grown weak. Modern Leftists are now left with political coalitions with no interests in the likes of Marx--these largely minority based coalitions have unfortunately been bought with ineffectual Welfare dollars.
So we are left with paradoxically a Modern Left defined by its own inevitability that doesn't believe in its Will to Power.
