With the current situation in Germany this specific degree of mine is probably the most sought-after of all the degrees available in the humanities.
It is still perhaps less sought after and most definitely paid worse than, say, engineering, biochemistry, even informatics, but that is not where my strengths lie.
Of course I also have a deep personal interest in the main topics of my degree, being philosophy, sociology and history. We also brush on psychology, media-technology and pedagogy, which is the only one I do not particularly care for.
This semester, to give you an example, among all my courses my favorites deal with the civil war of Spain and the scramble for Africa and the emergence of 'independent' nation states. Both seminars are primarily history focused.

Refugees assimilate surprisingly well. Of course there are only very few objective measures for this, but out of all the refugees I have spoken to, and it happens on a daily basis, almost all of them that have stayed here for more than a few months already speak conversational German. That is impressive, because to me German is a very hard language to master. Nothing compared to for example English or Spanish, who are far easier.
On the other hand there are second or third generation children of immigrants, often from Belarus or Anatolia, where some of the wifes do not speak proper German even living here their whole life. That is quite sad.

Now as for economic suicide, I disagree. There are a couple of obvious economic advantages, such as:
1) Fighting the declining birth rate in Germany
2) Helping improve the pension system (related to 1) I suppose)
3) 'Brain Drain' - Only people with money, often the more educated will flee, especially from ME countries. That is horrible for them, but bad for us. I have met tons of Syrians with more than one degree. But not just that. Germany does not just need specialists. Even someone with an Ausbildung will do just fine. As long as they are in the workforce, they are contributing to positive change.
4) Even people in the welfare system are not as big of a drain as you think. You have to take into account the fact that the people 'lowest on the social ladder', people with little income or living from welfare will always spend all the money they have. They invest it right back in the economy, essentially pushing our nation's income with money we just spent. On the paper this is useless, but in reality investors look at different stats than politicians do. If our GDP is doing well so is our economy.

Legally refugees are not allowed to work. I sincerely hope you know that. They first have to be accepted (process is similar to a visa). The process can take years, though usually 6 months to a year. A lot of refugees are frustrated that they cannot work and make their own money.
