North Dakotan here. It's pretty misleading. It's jsut skewed because our population is pretty low. The average household income is probably more like in the 40k range. It's a low cost of living area, however home prices have skyrocketed in the last 5+ years and makes everyone including myself who is just starting their careers essentially forced to marry if they ever want to afford a house of any quality.
The high incomes in the oil patch are very random and many people from out of state fucked up the western portion. It's still a great state to live on the eastern portion in my opinion. I wish the housing market would go down or else I will be renting for another 5-10 years depending on if I double my income with someone.
