I've read up on it, and from what I can tell, the Temple ceremonies are basically like Masonic initiation ceremonies. Lots of mystical stuff and pageantry that is weird mostly for the sake of being weird.
You dress in white robes, do the baptism, watch a movie (or a pageant if you're in Utah) about god, jesus, and satan and their interrelationship with each other according to the LDS principles, then you learn the secret gestures and handshakes that you will need to perform in order to enter heaven, then you get to sit and contemplate it all in a fancy room.
Then, you get to rinse, repeat for every dead relative that you want/need to posthumously baptize so that they too can join you in Mormon heaven. If you're really devout, you'll do the Temple ceremonies so many times that you could repeat it all backwards with your eyes closed. At that point, you usually end up getting to play god/jesus/satan in the pageants and ceremonies instead of having to watch it again and again.
It's silly AF, but it's honestly no weirder than any other religious ceremonies when you get down to it.
I've always kind of figured that if I were to join a church, I'd do the LDS thing since it seems to be the best parts of

You do have to pay 10% if you want to go to the temple. Temple attendance it's necessary for exhaultation (Mormon's heaven is separated into 3 parts (father, son, and holy spirit) and the highest kingdom is also separated into 3 parts. You need to go to the temple to get to the best of the best)

Current Mormon. It's a good deal, try going to church for at least a solid month before being baptized. You can go to church and participate in many activities with them before committing yourself to anything if that's what you are afraid of.
With that said, be wary of some former mormons. They're not all bad; but in my experience it's usually some little upstart who either left at age 12 or were forced to go by their parents until they moved out of the home. I was a Mormon for about a year. Got baptized and everything, eventually realized the mainline church is as cucked as everything else in mainline society. No one was interested in deep doctrine, shit changes every few years, when a cute blonde missionary who was working at my church went back to Utah and married a brown Amerindian spic (not even a lighter mostly Spanish latino, I mean a full on Amerindian) I dropped that cult like a bag of cats off a bridge.
The fundies are pretty cool, I'm still friends with a few Mormon fundamentalists online and we talk, but eventually it required me to suspend my disbelief too much for what in the end was no different from any other church. I'm pretty much a Deist now bordering on agnosticism and every now and then I visit an Orthodox church with a few WP friends. I think if I had to answer either of our questions without any form of bias. I think it is the idea of compromise. Here, everyone as a kid is fed information that "you can be whatever you want" or that we're all "rock stars" and "special snowflakes". But at a certain age, I think (most) people realize that they aren't special, they aren't going to be a rock star, and it's unlikely that they're going to achieve their childhood dream. So they compromise day in and day out, thinking that it's all they're good for.
In my opinion, it's this later "realization" in life that causes people to strive to just be mediocre; when in reality, we are (and can be) much more than what we perceive ourselves to be.
