I've found its cheaper to go to the nice market when just shopping for myself or a few people. grocery stores pack all the veggies and stuff by the pound, or put the 3 pound bags on sale, so you save some but still spend more than you intended. at the nicer store its much easier to buy smaller portions. the fruit and veggies are nicer than the regular store and usually the same price or better. meat cost a little more.
