There's no need to immediately call the police if you shoot a home intruder. In fact, don't. Let the intruder bleed out and then call.
When you do call 911, speak softly tell them you think there is another intruder in the house.
This way, if it ever comes up in a grand jury, it is entirely believable that you couldn't call 911 immediately because you were frightened and sheltered in place until you felt you could safely make it to the phone.
