First off, both candidates are unpopular, something we have never seen before. The VP pick is one obvious way to reassure voters that maybe Trump is not crazy and maybe Hillary is not evil -- or at least to assure them that there is a competent person standing there to take over if need be. (This also comes into play because of Hillary's age and possible bad health.)
Trump also has an interesting decision to make, if he picks an insider with lots of experience, does he gain more from picking up wavering traditional Republicans than he loses among voters who currently like him because he is not a part of the insider system?
