Marines still used the M16A4 because they have a hardon for extra barrel length that makes almost no difference.

Lightweight ammo means you can carry more of it though. Life isn't a game, having smaller bullets doesn't mean you're going to have to plink down someone's HP bar instead of 1-shotting them, a bullet is a bullet unless you're in some situation where you need the higher penetration of the 7.62 round.

The AR is more intuitive to use for a civilian population as well. Sure you may be an expert with your gun, but in a true, full on HAPPENING you may not be the only one who has to use it. You wouldn't want your daughter or wife fumbling around to rock the magazine in just right on an AK or fumbling with it's safety, or getting their aim knocked around by it's heavier recoil.

>>
>>80560038
You are a dipshit. 5.56 was chosen for a lot of reasons.
1. The high velocity causes fragmentation, which compared to a lot of other FMJ rounds is more deadly.
2. It is much lighter weight to carry a load of 210 rounds of 5.56. Weight means everything to an infantryman.
3. It is much more controllable in rapid fire due to less recoil.
>>
>>80560145
>You need to read about ballistic coefficient.

7.62x51 has the flight characteristics of a brick. It's just widely known and used so it's shit bullet drop is well documented and predictable. There are much more efficient rounds with good stopping power out there. Not in favor or against .308 or 5.56.

You also need to realize I live innawoods and use .308 for hunting dear, bear, and sometimes coyotes if they're annoying enough.

If society collapses, I'm perfectly safe where I live, but I'd be venturing out through the woods and would have a perfect overlook into the valley of the nearest city where I can sit atop.

5.56 works well obviously, the military uses it for most rifles, but a large number of military snipers use 7.62x51, which is the replacement for the 30-06
>>
>>80560805
Oh sorry I forgot to point out why this is true. Go Google compare the flight path of .308 to 30-06 and get back to me. Any will do the job with good placement but that's all it takes. Good shot placement.

Replacement is giving it too much credit. Long shots still use anything and everything with more powder or bullet than the 308. Of course 308 kills. No one is arguing it doesnt. It just isn't the death star of rifle rounds.

Everything comes down to application. Its cheap, plentiful, accurate, does just about a good of a job as the 30-06, both are the rounds of choice for military applications, as well as hunting.
>>

>>
>>80561677
That is an entirely unprovable statement. Accuracy is dependent on far too many variables. 30-06 has been a long range hunting round for years. But since you insist. Use any of the super 30 calibers if you want but 30-06 gets you more range, more energy, and less drop for not that much more money.
>>
>>80561845

This is true

The military philosophy at the time wanted a round that disabled combatants but allowed them to ultimately live with medical treatment. The problem was that 5.56 was a lighter projectile going at a faster speed that creates a much larger permanent wound cavity when it strikes. A wound from a 5.56 is much "nastier" than a wound from a 7.62 x 39

You can see the lug bolt there, it's probably intact and could fire just fine.

Mostly a bunch of fire would come out but that bullet would be traveling pretty quick already too.

Til you go to jail for illegal modifying it with an old ass receiver buried in your chest.

You need good sights though, and then you can develop a load with a handgun powder and lead bullets.

Fun.

That's why it's a flame thrower. The bullet keyholes at three feet. I don't think I want to be shot with it.

The entire receiver assembly passes through the stock. It's locked in there as tightly as the full size rifle. Those barrel bands are mostly just there to keep the stock and the barrel together.

Can i shoot you in the face with my 5.56 OP? If you die, you win. You live, i let you suck my dick. Either way, you win!
>>
>>80564536
With a proper handload and projectile it'd be much better. Full power ammo will of course blow shit everywhere.

I would just use lead balls myself or Keith bullets or wadcutters, something flat, and made of softer lead, with a handgun poder like hs-6
>>
>>80564731
I will try this, what could possibly go wrong?
>>
>>80564536
I would still rather be shot with that than a bow/crossbow with one of those broadhead razor bladed tips. Fuck that shit. At least ol spunky up there might kill me instantly.

AR15s are a semi auto civillian rifle.

Trail Boss would be the safest powder, it's designed to be basically un-blow-up-able if you use lead bullets. Put the powder in first then some kapok or artificial pillow stuffing in the case to keep the powder by the primer. It will melt into a little ball and shoot out the barrel after the bullet.

Its one or two retards trying to play mental gymnastics about what is or isn't "milspec"

A good equivalent is if the army used a computer A and called it the M-1.

And the M1 had a 3rd mouse botton, and then the Army claimed that the Computer A is "functionality" different than what it uses, even when we all know it isn't.
>>
>>80566143
The ones who aren't autistic just don't post. You only see the bad sample groups with no control set to compare and contrast. This is the same in almost any and everything except sonic and MLP. Sonic is debatable but when you consider the original fan base was supposed to be young kids it's safe to assume that fully grown adults really liking sonic are probably fucked up somehow.

>having smaller bullets doesn't mean you're going to have to plink down someone's HP bar instead of 1-shotting them

It does mean exactly that though. That is one of the longest standing and most worriesome objections to the .223 rifle, It fails to reliably neutralize targets in a single hit. Soldiers have been reporting that exact complaint from vietnam to the present. and the military went back to 7.62x51 for this very reason.

It has the capacity to.

A 55g 5.56 round that fragments and tumbles on impact can do extreme damage to human targets, whereas 7.62x39 simply pushes through fresh with minimal expansion or change of course.

what are holler points. same with 9mm
>>
>>80569510
Hollow Point loads for 7.62x39 are inefficient; its a short, stubby round that travels pretty slow.

Whereas .223 expanding hollow point rounds can consistently expand to .51 caliber squash heads, and FMJ/OTM 5.56 loads violently fragment and break apart at reasonable velocities.
