It's open-source as opposed to whatever Apple offers you I guess. There's no real privacy advantage in itself, but it makes it easier to set up a proxy compared to using webmail.
He most likely uses it though because I'm sure he has mail accounts with several providers (on top of his Facebook address) and doesn't handle all his mail correspondence on a single Gmail account like a pleb.
