But for the gut first reaction it sounds like a good pick; Generals or men with long service records tend to make good Presidents, and I have no doubt should the worst happen that he could fill the role easily without being overwhelmed. He would also provide the credibility that Trump so desperately needs to swing Centrist Dems and Independents on foreign policy. And it would make me confident that Trump's military goals of stopping ISIS, rebuilding the military, and then non-intervention would be fulfilled.

It's sort of like 2008, really. McCain wanted to pick Lieberman but took Palin instead to mollify the base and the media crucified him. In this election, Flynn is Lieberman and Pence is Palin. Trump gets the GOP by default. Flynn gets Dem fence sitters.

The nominee is allowed to choose, but in a normal case the convention has to vote on whether to approve the VP choice.
However, if memory serves, GOP convention rules state that if a candidate wins on the first ballot, their VP choice is automatically confirmed.

The main problem in US politics in since 80's has been the fact that internal party politics have been won by serving fringes. In essense parties have been ran by fringes instead of moderates. With some hindsight Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan seem to be last moderate presidents, but even that was in reality due to opposing party dominating the hill on their terms. Last true moderate presidents have been fucking Carter and Nixon.
