I was about to say the exact same thing.
Personally, for my wife and myself, we have about 1500 sq, ft. now and plan to stay under 2000, neither of us want all the space at this point. But, if someone wants a 15k sq ft mega-mansion with 15 bedrooms and 3 swimming pools, good on them if they can afford it, if the money came legally,miss nobody's business what they choose to spend it on. My house is ~6k sqft. The reason my family "needs" the space is my wife and I have a newborn and 2 year old. Both sets of grand parents visit for weeks at a time due to being retired and having nothing better to do. Also I hate my inlaws. To top it off my aunt was laid off last year and she lives in the apartment over the garage. My siblings and their families also visit pretty regularly.
tl;dr: so family doesn't kill each other.
