Why do Americans go out of their way to defend automatic cars?

Are they just extremely insecure?

It seems like they need to justify themselves and make others believe that automatic is the "right" and better way to drive.
>>
>implying it's not more insecure to believe operating a machine that has manual gears makes you more male than other men

back when automatics came out everyone wanted one

it wasn't until underage millennial tryhards with their lumbersexual fashion started acting like having a piece of shit manual was some kind of man card

it's literally ALL they have as "men"

so enjoy your cheap ass manual shitbox
>>
>>80419963
It's just the economics of the situation
fuel is cheaper over here and the extra cost of buying an expensive automatic doesn't mean as much as in europe

also
>female transmission
>>
Americans don't really make this argument. They just prefer an automatic because it's easier and sitting in traffic and riding the clutch is irritating.

In my opinion, manuals are best for hobbyist vehicles like muscle and sports vehicles and autos are best for commuter boxes.
>>
What's wrong with automatic cars?

You don't control how much air comes through your nose by pressing your nostrils while feeling superior, do you?
>>
>>80419963
Because it's easier in commuter traffic. And a modern auto is better if every conceivable way to a manual.

Also please explain how you could make a manual cvt?
>>
>>80420315
I bet if you include the price of replacing your clutch an auto won't be that much different

I wouldn't say it's a matter of right and wrong. If you live in the city, it's a hassle to use a manual. The car I just purchased a month ago is an automatic, and it feels weird not having to shift when I'm by my house in the suburbs. But when I'm in the city, I don't miss my stick in the least.

>>
>>80420315

unless you're buying literal bargain basement cars like corollas or rios, not only will automatics be the base (cheaper) option, but a manual probably wont even be an option

>>80421234

automatics last pretty long, at least as long as the engine itself (before needing a rebuild) unless they were shittily designed from the getgo, with no problems outside minor electrical parts replacement

clutches can reliably reach 100+k unless you live in seattle or some other hilly stop and go nightmare, so its only going to need 1-2 replacements in the average lifespan of the car ownership

the cost difference is negligible, just buy what you want. if you think manuals are some sort of man card thing you're a fucking moron though, because even the dumbest of teenage girls can learn to drive a manual after a few evenings in a parking lot

In the states non sports car Manuals are getting harder to find. Even trucks are mostly autos now. Automatics are a ton more reliable than they used to be. Gas mileage difference is narrowed with CVTs and 5+ speed autos. And in an automatic, clutch replacement is a non issue. I myself prefer a manual, but when I got my Toyota an automatic was cheaper and easier to find.

Just bought my first automatic vehicle (2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport) after being a steadfast manual transmission driver. Automatics have greatly improved since the 1990s and many offer a semi-auto mode to help with fuel economy and prevent the ECU from doing dumbshit.

Manual transmission in America is largely obsolete as we use automobiles on a daily basis for everything since most medium to small sized cities and towns lack a viable public transit system. Furthermore, no other driver gives you room on hills making starts in a manual a perilous experience for neophytes.

Also F1 is semi-auto. My Jeep is closer to Scuderia Ferrari than your rusty Miata.

Why would you ever bump start a fucking car, a motorcycle makes sense because you can do it easy enough by yourself, but a +2500lb car is a different story, just ask somebody for a jump. I have owned two 2007 ford focus's one in auto one in manual and neither ever got more than 29mpg and they both fell apart and died at 250,000 miles. The auto had the advantage of not needing a working hand brake to pass safety inspection.

Why most automatics shift more effectively than manuals nowadays. The only reason I'd have a manual is if I had a 4 wheel drive jeep and did a lot of off roading.

No more maintenance than an automatic

You're more likely to have to do maintenance on a standard that an automatic or cvt
>>
>>80425077
I don't think so, I've driven both and shifting gears is not really so frequent that I could call it something to do to pass time.
Sometimes it's fun to do, but when I'm in a new city and really have to focus on the traffic and roads, I much rather focus on where I need to go than gears.

Manual/automatic comparison to me is like hearing someone saying diswasher users are being lazy for not washing their dishes manually. If there is way to make life easier why not do it?
>>
>>80425260
>2007 ford focus
I had an 01 focus. I literally changed everything on it minus the transmission. Damn that car was shit but I got 11 years out of her. I heard after 06 they got way better. In '14 I was getting a new car, almost got me another focus but I opted for a Tacoma instead. As much shit that car gave me I miss her.
>>
>>80425276
I would agree with everything except cheaper maintenance. An auto will last a long time with periodic fluid changes. A manual will eventually need a clutch. Depending on the car it can be pretty pricey. My sister got a clutch put in her Mini at the tune of $2500. It would take a lot of fluid changes in an auto to match that.
>>
Never in my entire life have I driven a manual car. I'm 23 years old and I've had my license since I was 15. How do you even get a manual car? Everything I've ever owned was a hand-me-down car and an automatic. Why would I want to pay more to be inconvenienced? I can barely afford a car to begin with.
>>
>>80425806

>>
I never understood hatred of automatics especially if you don't have a car that is built for racing or high speed like a Corvette or something.

The fact is manuals are just a huge inconvenience that make you jerk off a metal rod constantly as you are driving and modern automatic shift more effectively then most drivers can anyway.
Professional automatics (not the type typically found in your average car) can even shift more effectively then professional drivers.
>>
>>80423440

>>
>>80425814
Maybe I'm a bit different because I only use a dishwasher when hosting a party or cleaning up after a house full of disgusting college bros and the volume of things to wash is out of control.

But the whole fun of standard is getting it down to where you can flip it around without even thinking, and also look at the map etc. while you're at it.
>>
>>80425276
Not really that much more control, not like you are towing in a car and need not engine brake, and if you do most autos have a 1,2,3 selection that is more than enough.

From my experience here in Northern NY and Canada a manual isn't at all helpful in the winter. The clutch gets much heavier when cold starting in -30 or -40 freedoms plus to prevent your tires from breaking loose every time you start from a stop you have to slow down on the clutch, increasing clutch wear.

Again there is this point about maintenance but I don't think I have ever had to do anything to my transmissions and all three cars I have ever owned have gotten over 200,000miles before I got sick of them.

I wouldn't say a manual is anymore or less fun than an automatic, you just usually find them on sport cars which are mainly fun because they are sport cars.

This applies directly to me so I'll give my two cents. I own a Mustang, a 2005 specifically, and it's a great car even though I only take semi-decent care of it these days. I love the car, women love my car, but some douchebags don't love my car because it's an automatic. That is to say that I frequently get people chastising me for not getting a manual once I tell them what kind of car I own. They make some kind of big deal about it being an automatic, and frequently conversations about my car involve people telling me that I should've gotten a manual instead.

At this point, I like to remind people that automatic cars can change gears faster than the fastest NASCAR driver, and that driving a stick would be an especially huge pain in the ass over the long distances that I typically drive.

TLDR it's because they force us to.

You can, its just not that easy.

What you definitely can't find now is a manual truck... that is really fucking stupid. I need a truck for work, and I want it to be as cheap as possible to operate and maintain. Modern automatics do get better fuel economy now, but only marginally. They are far more expensive to fix and far more prone to malfunction though. Fuck this shit.

Even with cars its getting shitty though. Many manufacturers only offer manual transmission on the higher level trim packages. So again, the people who would benefit most from them, poorer people, are getting shit on because manuals are now artificially more expensive.
