In 2016, there is one true Communist state that isn't terrible, and several Islamist theocracies that are thriving. Let's compare Marx and Muhammad.

Because communism is an impossible imaginary system, that's what it becomes.
There are flaws with Communism under the existing monetary-structured economic system and its ideas about the fundamental nature of humanity, but even citizens after the Russian Revolution knew that some of its most basic promises, involving the proletariat owning the means of production for example, simply had not been delivered.
The starry promises of 'Communism' were simply used as a means for power-hungry men to seize control for themselves. Communism, as Marx himself envisioned, has just never been set into practise.
I'd argue that the reasons for that is a combination of its lacking in comprehensive scientific understanding of the natures of human beings, and the fact that many of its desired outcomes have been much too far ahead of their time, which in order to reach those aims would have required huge advances in automated technologies and energy production, as opposed to basically relying of the whole population of its citizens to set aside their own individual self-interests to work simply in order to keep the system going, which one could argue is completely unfeasible and restricts the freedom of individuals far too much.
