In the American context especially, AR15s are inexpensive, plentiful and extremely popular, also due to the fact that it's basically a variant of their militairy's primary infantry rifle. It also takes STANAG mags and standard NATO 5.56 as well as pestcontrol-tier .223 ammo. All of this means you have an abundant rifle many people are familiar with, some profesionally (LEOs, militairy). There's a huge aftermarket, there are likely surplus accessories and ammo available from time to time due to the M16 being in miltairy service and the ammo being NATO standard...
What this leaves you with is a lightweight rifle (wood looks friendly, but weighs a lot) that works everytime most of the time (;DD), viable as pest control, sports, defense or hunting rifle with enough parts available to re-build it after the third Apocalypse.
