The proton packs don't kill ghosts, I don't think ghosts *can* be killed (or dispersed or whatever) but the beams can weaken and capture them.
But the proton beams are powerful real-world weapons. Against ectoplasm they just weaken/capture, against material objects they are flippin particle beam weapons, they're Iron Man Repulsors cranked up to 11. They did obvious physical damage, and caused pain to, Stay-Puft in the first movie because he was piloting a physical form.

So it might make 20-40 million opening weekend, but then it'll drop like a rock.
Independence Day 2 shows that even if there is nothing else premiering that weekend, audiences still won't show up and the new Star Trek movie will be releasing the week after and while that also looks like shit, one of its actors was just killed so people might see it just because it was his last role. Finally, the movie isn't going to be released in China so there is no way it will be able to be saved like Pacific Rim or Warcraft were.

Here in Europe there's another reason. It's summer. People go to the movies in autumn and winter, not in summer when it's nice outside. I can understand that that's a factor in the US where you need air condition to survive, but not here.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the new Star Trek film since it was written by Simon Pegg, and if nothing else he takes his Star Trek very seriously (this is the same guy who turned down a role in Star Wars because he believed that actors shouldn't appear in both franchises); and IIRC he was very disappointed with the action-y trailer because that's not really what the film is about at all.
