The part where he discovers what happened to his wife is interesting to watch from the modern day perspective. When I first saw the movie, I assumed she'd be injured or dead for whatever reason, or maybe she ended up with another man and George would be burning in jealousy. But turns out she ended up better off than a lot of the other cast members did, yet finding out that she's a spinster now was the last straw for George. The woman seems to be basically what a lot of SJWs today are; working a modest job with no husband and no children. And it's treated as the most horrifying, soul-crushing fate that a woman could have.
So yeah, I agree that a movie like that would probably be torn into shreds if it were released today. The movie celebrated a lot of traditional values that are considered old-fashioned these days. The part where living alone and outside a nuclear family was condemned like that was the most memorable example for me.
