Because the concept of worth is so tied up in physical beauty. You aren't shit of you're not at least as beautiful as the next girl... So the solution is to wear skimpy clothing to show everyone your beautiful body.
Part of this has to do with our evolutionary history - our brains have evolved to judge more attractive people as more worthy. But part of it also has to do with modern society's obsession with self-esteem and feeling good about oneself. Hence, these girls are "doing it for themselves" in the sense that they are maintaining self-worth by attempting to convey to society and self that they are indeed physically attractive.
