^Pretty much this. The Chinese had a concept called, "The Mandate of Heaven" which was kind of a broad concept (it includes random things like natural disasters), but it included legitimate revolution. Basically they thought that if someone rebelled against the current ruler and won, then they won because they had the mandate of heaven, which is basically the approval of nature for what they did. Basically, if you rebelled and were successful it was because you were in the right and you got instant legitimization. The second amendment functions in a similar way, if you rebel and lose you did not have enough support from the general populace to gain legitimacy. If you rebel and win then you had enough support from the population and thus gain legitimization. Of course one or two lone snipers won't win against an entire nation, but if black people got organized into a proper militia this is a real possibility.
