I've never thought of it like that.
Looking back, most of American variety was made up of English, German, and other European nationalities. For the most part, I think it worked because they were mostly all white and there was mostly similarities with each other, though even then there was friction between some groups. Even when churches began splitting into all sorts of different sects like Baptism and such, for the most part I think it worked because they were all mostly in the broad Christian belief system. If you bring Muslims en masse to the states, it'd probably be okay, though there'd be some racism at first and they'd have to assimilate to the native culture. But the problem in Europe is that they're not assimilating.
