Its already happening. Baltimore is on track to have half of its police force quit by the end of the year. Smaller towns have felt it too. Cicero IL was on track to reopen its police department but over the last 6 months 250 of the 300 applicants withdrew so the State and County will keep up patrols indefinitely it seems

A lot of departments. The issue is, at least in Illinois, you must be a resident of the town/city to work there. So if you patrol a neighborhood that is all million dollar houses (Inverness and Barrington Illinois) the departments pay you a wage consistent with what you need to live there.
However the majority of "top pay" departments are in the uber expensive areas of California. For example Napa CA officers start at 100k a year. NYC officers start at 90k a year. I cant find it but I want to say Barrington Illinois officers start at 120k a year, but have a Cost of Living that averages around 900k a house and over 700k for a small 1 bedroom condo. Its all about that cost of living. Of the top 30 paying cities in America 26 of them are in California

As another britfag, this concept is quite foreign to most people. Over here any person can use self defence, so long as the force is reasonable, to protect yourself and others, prevent crime or assist in an arrest. This is in accordance with common law and Section 3 of the Criminal Law Act 1967 (if you're interested in reading).
To us, fists would be met with fists or at most an armed or unarmed strike to the head. The thought of shooting someone over a fistfight is excessive in our culture, not even taking into account our inexperience in gun culture.
We'd be more accepting of gun use in response to lethal weapons like knives.

Using appropriate force is extremely contextual, which is why force investigations are incredibly lengthy and complex to someone who has not been properly educated on how shootings are handled by American law enforcement. Granted, I can only speak for bigger agencies (places with at least 150 or more officers).
Again, contextual example: If three men come at you with fists and say you ordered them to stop or you will be forced to defend yourself, and they advance anyway: Clean shoot IMO.
Not quite so clear and clean: Three guys come at you with fists, you tell them to fuck off, possibly angering them further, you guys tussle, and you pull your CCW and blast all three. There's a good chance for either of the following to happen, and not limited to these two pretend scenarios either: Responding LEOs are competent enough to stitch together a report that accurately details the facts, you get in trouble but not locked away, DA/ADA review and drop your case. Scenario 2, you get taken to trial, hope you hired a competent defense attorney (and have the money up front to pay, because no good criminal defense attorney works on contingency), and hopefully prove your innocence.

I agree with you. I'm a response cop and I've used strikes and my baton to get people down, perhaps when a simple restraint would do. In public this looks very bad and you're guaranteed to be recorded by some dick, but it's our job to de-escalate violence as fast and possible and keep everyone safe. Our culture is more honour based, where you'd be picked on for hitting someone from behind. We get a lot of flack for excessive force because it LOOKS bad.
People who resist or obstruct us are dangerous and shouldn't be allowed to lead by example. I had a newbie almost let someone go from a stop search because a guy with a camera approached us and kept telling our suspect that we didn't have the right to search him. I had that colleague arrest him (his first) for obstruction.
I don't personally think I could ever shoot someone and am glad I'll never be in that situation, but I completely understand your concept of violence of action (even for members of the public). In the US violent situations are heightened with guns in the mix. I have respect for anyone who chooses to carry and defend themselves (except the kinds of pricks who are under the illusion that they could have saved everyone whenever a mass shooting pops up on the news).
