With stuff getting tense around the US, my wife is feeling less and less safe. It's started impacting her sleep, so I want to look into some ways I can fortify or prepare my home ahead of time, as well as things I could go ahead and prefab/store to further assist down the road if anything did happen and I had to ride out the Rise of the Planet of the Apes for a weekend. What's necessary? What's a good idea? What's stupid and a money grab?

Just buy a pistol and learn to shoot it well in a confined space. It's literally all a NEET will need in their apartment when SHTF. Cap a few motherfuckers who try to get you, save some bullets for when you finally can't scrounge and starve, if the shit lasts that long.

I've got a Storm carbine because it's literally the only weapon I can practice with in this area of the state(Short of driving several hours away). I'd love an AR, but not being able to practice with it in a practical sense seems impractical. Your thoughts?

Some tips to secure your home but not make it look like a fort.
Your outside doors are probably only secured into the door frames. These are 1×4's. Get some 4 inch #10 screws to replace the screws in your hinges to the frame. You'll hit the framing boards. Same with the latches. They also make special reinforcement kits for arou d the knobs.
Secure your Windows with security film.
If you want to stop incoming rounds from shooting positions at windows then build some reinforced flower beds in front of the windows.
All doors should have w points of resistance. Whether you have a portico or just a storm door.
Have a way into the attic and out the roof.
Real storm shutters could be helpful.
Have secured choke points in the house of the intruders get in.
Plenty of extinguishers for fire supression. A fire suppression system would be god tier. Will likely be burned out if anything.
