Religion is always in transition. Christianity is rather peaceful today because it was reformed over time.
Now take at the Middle East where the West has blocked democracy and development for it's own intrests. Reformers are being shot down with German weapons by some crazy sheiks.
I know it's not ALL our fault, but it's a piece of the puzze which is often overlooked. Just take a look at Arab public opinion polls. Democracy would be a nightmare for the West which has been recognized since around WW1 when the world shifted to an oil-based economy. These policies apply in other places, too, for example the right-wing coups in Latin America. These policies would have been the same if the Russians didn't exist.

The "Rome" that fell in 1453 is not recognized by modern historians as the Roman Empire but rather as the Byzantine Empire which had already been in decline for hundreds of years. Sure, the rise of Islam contributed to that, but so did countless other factors.
