I've said that before and a surprising amount of people have told me how fucked up they think it is, but why?
A guy that would shoot a cop at a traffic stop isn't going to tell him he has a gun first. I tell the cop I carry and he may start to get nervous. He may even want me to temporarily surrender it to him for the duration of the stop, which I also am not required to do. Now I have a nervous cop and an unholstered weapon. The situation is 110% worse than if I kept my mouth shut, which the law basically tells me to do anyway.
I'll let them know out of courtesy if for any reason a situation arises that leads to them likely being able to see it anyway. Also if I'm open carrying, which I never do, incase they suddenly notice and would get startled. I don't know the laws where they were and in many places you absolutely have to tell the cop you're armed, even if stopped for a tail light out. At the risk of sounding BLM myself, its not like that. That shit wouldn't happen to me. I can reach in my pocket, glove box, etc all day long and they don't bat an eye. I can tell them I have a gun, which I often, and they generally thank me for the courtesy of letting them know. I live in a decent part of town and am white.

It depends on the cop and the person with the gun. An LAPD officer in the worst part of LA is going to react differently than a small town Indiana sheriff in an all white farming community.
Be smart about it. Its not like everybody doesn't already know that the relationship between blacks and law enforcement is a bit contentious in this country.
I don't have to inform here, but I have a few times had my permit ready with my drivers license to hand the cop. Honestly just to see how they'd react. Every time they thanked me in some way and never brought it up again. Had I said, "I have a gun" and then reached into my waistband they might have reacted differently. Its tough to say, because again every situation is different and a lot of factors come into play.
I'd never surrender my weapon. I don't legally have to at a traffic stop. But if I did, and I was black, I'd make damn sure they cop was the one taking it.
