It's not what the south's like at all. I've been through the deep south many times, and routinely saw colored people and white people hanging out. The whole racist south thing died out back in the 60's. The only people who think that southerners hate colored people are northern democrats who've probably never seen a non-white person in their lives. The best example I can give of whites and colored's getting along in the south was at a gas station I drove by. Outside there were a bunch of white farmers and illegal immigrant pickers sharing a drink together.

I live in North Carolina, and one of my friends is a gay black man. I've never personally witnessed them being discriminated against, but him, his fiance, and his gay friends all seem to be pretty well-adjusted.
