I dunno, Thatcher?
At some point Labour decided that having open borders and letting millions of immigrants swarm in was a good idea. Corbyn seems to spend a lot of his time worrying about the hardships of people who aren't British. And Labour are confused as to why they've lose the votes in the north of England.
They seem to believe that because the North of England traditionally voter Labour, they're all charitable left wingers. They're not. They voted labour because of employment, wages and workers rights, all supported by Labour. That doesn't mean they're a left wing pacifist hippies. They're not interested in letting millions of foreigners in and giving them free housing and healthcare.
If a party offered support to British workers and welfare while taking a hard line against inmigration, they'd do well. But Labour and the Tories don't offer this. Labour thing all Labour voters love immigration, while the Tories want to hit everyone with cuts.
