You realize that tuition free college isn't about "LOL FREE GIBS" as some of you say. Its about educating your population so they can find employment and not be total NEET fags.
>>
You realize that college today is a joke right? Baby boomers ruined it when they grew up and became Marxist hippie professors and ramped up the tuition. Yes having a degree makes you more viable in the workforce but don't pretend it's because college makes you smarter. A good proportion of the 5 in every 6 people who don't major in STEM are coming out of college dumber than they were before, and making the same economic contribution (nothing) as they were before.

For one, this platform assumes you need a college degree to find a good paying job when you don't and second, it assumes that everyone wants to go to college when that isn't the case either. This is without even going to into the fact that many people get degrees in worthless subjects with minimal job opportunities.

So now you feel you need to reach into my pocket, to pay for your worthless degree while I didn't feel the need or desire for college, took a trade, and make good money without wasting four years of my life in college.

That's why I despise the "free" college meme and that strawman image is fucking retarded considering you get 12 free years of basic education already.

FPBP sums it up perfectly
Most people go to college and just waste resources and learn absolutely nothing useful to contribute to society and often ruin it. Just look at the feminist witch hunt mentality of making everything to be racist sexist and just overall making society worse. Not every subject in college is useful and the sad truth is most of it is just a complete waste of resources.

If the point is that they find employment, then explain to me why so many college grads can't find work today and how a 2 years associate degree from public college will do anything about that?

Hell, getting those 2-4 years of free college are still predicated on dumb people being accepted by those institutions. If their tuitions are covered, then they'll only let in people they think will be making millions that can be donated back for research and endowments. Average joes will be cut out of this shit the most and those with a professional or entrepreneurial edge from their rich parents will get ahead more than the others, this system benefits the rich more than the poor.
>>
>>79962619

Exactly, according to free market blaheebloobloo theory, if everyone learns that 2+2 = 4, then that depreciates the usefulness of knowing that 2+2 = 4. We could also make the case that making this knowledge rarer inflates the wages of those that know, so we should keep this knowledge from the rest of the populace. I believe this is a good direction for progress for the human race.

>>
>>79963757
They don't value it even when you pay for it. Most people fail to realize that a college degree is just a filter that employers use to get rid of the shitty candidates because it's quite expensive to train and employ a person and you don't want to waste thousands of dollars when your business becomes a revolving door. So you come up with criteria that has to be met so the candidates you do get have some semblance of respectability.
>>
>>79962619
Most of the people calling for free college are already being educated, nigger. Why can't we just go back to the old fashioned way of doing things and have the employer directly train his employee in how to do a task straight our of high-school. It makes a lot more sense than having people learn random subjects in college for 4 years that have little to do with the work.

No, it means that when you have the exact same skills as everyone around you, your personal value is where it was pre-college. It means you enter a constant arms-race with every person interested in the same professional field to be getting more education and more qualifications. This benefits employers because they more often don't have to hire you but the bar is always being raised and often unnecessarily.

Stock markets aren't particularly more difficult to understand now than they were 30 years ago (the additions of computers to the trading process makes it faster but the philosophy hasn't changed) and yet most places won't hire you unless you have both a Masters and 3 years of internship with them under your belt AND higher mathematics skills

I don't know about your hellhole of a continent, but in America neither of those things is true. Trade jobs pay reasonably well across the board. Exceptionally well if you're motivated and competent. There are plenty of fields starving for new blood.
Getting a degree and/or a career that "requires" a degree is almost entirely driven by a desire to improve social status, not economic.

No, it's not about being special, it's about scarcity in the marketplace. Unskilled labor makes low wages because any retard can do it. If a certain job market has an influx of candidates able to do the work, job opportunities dry up and wages go down because the employer can easily replace you.

Autists like >>79964011 think that if every faggot has a degree, everyone will become a magical job superman and make good money and live the ideal American dream when the reality is that he'll still be flipping burgers at McDonald's with a masters degree because he doesn't have a PhD and his field has no openings.

Mostly because of diversity and no-one gets left behind.

I actually do believe a large percentage of our high-school graduates are competent enough to get a job straight out of high-school- if they were trained well by their employer.

Its just become a mantra and almost a religion in the U.S. that our high-school system is worthless. That college textbooks are the new Bible- that reading college textbooks is the path to a higher self.

And its just pure laziness and irresponsibility from the baby boomer and gen X generations who say "I don't want to train the millennials for a job, I think colleges should do that for me." Of course this isn't going to work, when the college professors have never agreed to training students to become employees.

College is for if you want a research position or you want some job that requires understanding the theoretical underpinnings of things.
For instance, if you want to design a nuclear reactor, you need solid foundation in particle physics probably.
If you want to code some web app, you are wasting your time in college.

Pretty much. University education has been downgraded and diversified into the crapper. Not to mention that (even in Europe) it's run as a for-profit business. Even when they don't make profit, because the numbers of graduates themselves serve as a profit target for state-funded universities.

So universities have a lot to gain by offering people bogus educations. We have people rolling onto the labour market with degrees for specializations that only employ two people in the entire fucking country. And those are real sciences, let alone all this "media studies" crap and who knows what. The left has even taken to parking immigrant youth in what is supposed to be vocational school for, I shit you not, "light singing". That's a thing you can go to school for! Which lefties promise you will result in a career!

I can't even be mad at the students. When you were 18, did you know the ins and outs of educational politics? No, you didn't. This is firmly on the heads of politicians who knowingly fucked up our entire system, condemned an entire generation to debt and unemployment, and probably made bank while doing so.

And yes, corruption is a killer of all societies. Maybe Serbia can pull a Russia, and have the corruption work its favor by pulling a weird supply-side arrangement where the corrupt oligarchs are the investors.

I think he's talking about total tuition. My college tuition came out to something like $50,000/year, so $200,000 total. Financial aid took that down to $1250,000 (I was from a fairly well-off family, poorer students got more) and scholarships down to $50,000. Loans paid the rest. I walked away with $50k in debt and paid it off in 5 years because I found a great job.

> during the first 13 years of public K-12 schooling?
This. Everyone talks about post-secondary education even though the real problem is the k-12 system. When someone who just spent 12 fucking years in school still doesn't know how to survive in the real world and has zero marketable skills, there is a problem. The fact that a high school graduate, a grown adult, cannot do anything other than flip burgers, means there has to be sweeping reform to the education system.

Specializing at the high school level would be a step in the right direction. The fact that information recall is abysmally low after high school means that the overwhelming majority of that learning was a total waste of time. Time that could have been spent learning either useful life skills, or learning and developing skills that the market actually demands.

Well said, brother.

American high school teacher here and half the shit I am asked to do is just a waste of time and energy, even though I'm required by law to do it. We need to just get kids out and into the work force, teach them how to pay their bills, budget, be positive contributors to society, etc. So many of my teenage students can barely read no less wipe their ass or bathe themselves. And I have to review the concept of cell theory with them? While they have these shit covered, smelly assholes their mom didn't even teach them how to clean?

I would love if the American system kicked kids out into a trade immediately following junior high, and required 2 years of a service or internship to teach them "real world" skills as a high schooler. Then maybe they could take classes they wanted to take (business, natural science, engineering, psychology, nursing, etc.) as an older teen (17-20).

The system as it stands is so fucked up

Funny what excuses you NEETS come up to justify the fact that you are lazy leeches incapable of anything other than ranting on the internet.

There is nothing more pathetic than someone with just a high school degree. Not all degrees are women studies and not all professors are SJW marxists. If you ever went to a university you would know that.

Math courses, Physics courses, Engineering courses, economics courses etc are devoid of political agendas in reputable colleges.

Not everybody is cut out for higher education and many would be better off and happier working honest jobs in labor, manufacturing, industry, etc. Fleecing taxpayers to afford free college for everyone won't change that fact.

Sending more and more people who aren't capable of completing a college education to college will only encourage more young people to become perpetual students and put off having an actual life and career, and worse, will encourage colleges to drastically reduce the already plummeting standards and expectations for college students to the point where a college education becomes completely meaningless.

You're already seeing this in a lot of STEM fields. Standards nationwide used to be high enough that even getting a BS meant you had a clear grasp of the concepts and were intelligent and hard-working enough to succeed in a job in the field.... now nobody in industry will fucking touch you without at least an MS and some labs won't even give you an interview without a "Dr." in front of your name.

The government already offers people 12-13 years of free education. They spend thousands per kid per year. Look at the results. Half of the kids can't read or write at even a high school level. Many of them have to take remedial classes at college.

They don't need more education. They need a better quality education. Stop using graduation rates as a standard of success. Let dumb kids fail. Stop making things easier.

Let's be real now: In the past, employers would have educated these people and it was possible to start from the bottom. Today, they demand base competences in their employees, and when they need something else they fire said employee and hire another instead of training up people already with the company.

It's not just education that needs reforming (and it does need reforming). Employers need to be told they're reponsible for their own workforce, and the state is no longer going to pick up the slack by giving everyone a college education.

The problem with specializing in high school is that you're going to give dumb teens the most important decision they can make in their lives. They already do this after a fashion in Britain. And it's not like they're racing ahead of the rest of the world in terms of employment and education.

But yes, school seems to be nothing more than mandatory socialising and remembering a few base facts.

I fail kids constantly and all I get is shit from the school. I could be the most amazing, masterful teacher who holds his students to the line, but at the end of the day it's my job and if I fail too many kids I get "written up". It's happened at least twice in my 6 years of teaching.

I actually had a friend who was fired for failing 25% of his students in a middle school computers class. They were 8th graders learning how to program and do basic IT work as part of a voluntary elective course. A handful of kids refused to turn in work or even touch the keyboard during the entire year, even with multiple interventions, phone calls home, etc.. So, my buddy warned the parents and the administration for the 100th time that he was going to fail them and then he failed them. 15 out of 60 kids failed for the year, almost all of them minority kids from the inner city.

The administration asked him to quit or they would be forced to fire him. He stood his ground and, well, you get what happened next. Poor fucker has that as a "mark" on his record now too, no matter where he goes, if he uses this school as a reference he becomes known as the teacher who failed a quarter of his class. Has to explain it at interviews. Sucks.
>>
>>79966777
The flip side is employees are spending less time at each company. The best way to get a raise is to change companies. And since companies are no longer training their employees, there's no intensive to stay for long periods of time. Used to be that you would stay at one company nearly your whole life. Loyalty was rewarded with more responsibilities and money. Now its different. Best case you can move between departments in the same company, but more likely you'll be quitting when you want career advancement.

People like Obama have said that colleges should train the next generation of employees to be "work ready at day 1." And many boomer and gen X employers really believe in this idea.

The problem is, that college professors have never agreed to this idea. If you ask them what their job is, they will usually say "research, expanding minds, teaching general theories." They've never agreed to train the next generation of employees to be work ready at day 1.
>>
What if you believe that college is deadweight on society, the economy, and doesn't really educate people that well for the most part?

Then all that "free money" is wasted, along with people's wasted time that are encouraged to go. Just a loss to the economy.

College just needs to collapse. It is a big business. They all just need to be turned into law schools, tech schools, medical schools, engineerig studies, etc. that's all that would be remaining. Most would otherwise shut down. The sports teams you jerk off to keep them funded though. So when you go to college you're essentially paying partially for a sports game.

People change careers and education streams all the time, at any point in life. At worst, you're just giving dumb teens the most important decision they can make in the next few years. And this decision can be made a litte better informed through the aforementioned education reform.

I went to an academic high school. The expectation was that everyone would pick a standard university career and go with it, like engineer, doctor, lawyer, businessman, etc. What students don't get told is that there are orders of magnitude more jobs on the planet than the handful they think exist, and that their decision of what they "want to be when they grow up" has to be informed by market research. This blind, naive entry into post-secondary education is a large part of the reason we have so many starving artists and others with completely useless educations.

Yeah, I think it was $10k/year for housing and food, so $40k/year for classes. This was a private uni, so more expensive than most. In my state, there are three tiers of public unis - University of California ($25k/year with housing), Cal State University ($5k/year, no housing) and community ($1k/year but only offer 2 year degrees and transfer credits). An extremely poor student would do best at a well funded private university - who offer full need-based financial aid - or starting at a community college and transferring after 2 years.

I don't know much about how american STEM universities handle courses like political science but I've read stories online about how proffesors make you right about how great diversity is and how refugees are good. I always assumed this was an exaggeration though. If this is the normal then there is something wrong with your education system.

Our colleges are garbage (for other reasons) but courses like philosophy and political science were devoid of agendas, we approached things from a completely neutral standpoint and the proffessors were decent. And these courses weren't even mandatory for most of the time.

Its not free, someone else has to pay for it. All these European countries with publicly funded education have ridiculously high taxes.

The difference is that instead of financing your own degree some blue collar worker that never went to college has to pay for your education.

In Germany you earn really well if you study STEM, but you pay over 50% of your salary to the government. People that study useless crap will never pay back their fair share compared to that. Publicly funded college will only lead to more useless degrees that provide no value to society.
>>
>>79962619
I went to college and it's a joke. It's basically the same thing as high school for many majors. An example is all course which fall in the 'Liberal Arts' I was demoralized beyond repair when I took these courses / graded other students papers and then saw their final grade from the teacher. The vast majority of college graduates never progress past the intellect of a 16 year old.

Don't get me started on the professors, if you doubt that many of them are depressingly stupid just grow up a bit then look back. This one proffessor rambled for an entire class about her profound life experience - a near death episode that changed EVERYTHING it was so deep and so insane - do you know what it was? She was "blinded" by headlights when she was 25 and swerved off to the side of the road where she came to a safe stop - but WOW thank god she survived to tell us about the meaning of life.

This must have been at just some random shitty school? No that was at NYU and I took courses at other schools they're basically all the same

A tremendous waste of money for 90% of people and a sick joke in many respects for everybody.

>>
>>79968064
That's part of the problem. Employers set their hiring standards far too high, because they're too lazy to vet their candidates properly (with relevant skill testing, not "show me your papers, you're hired!"). If you ask graduates how much they remember from university when they've been working for a year or two, you'll find that recall is extremely low. Which means that they didn't actually need all that education for the job, they just needed a couple courses at most.

>>79968516
>it's different if you're gril, as far as i can tell none of the wellpaying trades are cut out for the weaker sex
On the contrary, most of the well-paying trades are less labor-intensive. Welding, for instance, doesn't require strength. Neither does plumbing. Neither does crane operating. Or wiring a house. These trades are male-dominated, which may dissuade some girls from joining, but there are certainly women working in them already and they do quite nicely (obviously there are useless cunts, but there are plenty of guys like that too). Women just have to be willing to get their hands dirty if they want money.

my school was higher on the us news world report and it was basically paying 40k a year to teach yourself from a textbook. was class of 2011 so lots of recession shit and as far as i know none of my peers are appropriately employed.

>Education is the great equalizer between the classes

I'm not talking about class warfare frog. To make it in the [current year] you need skills. Trade school is fine but some people want to continue their education past HS. College tuition is fucking insane.

I'm 12k deep with 2 years to go in my Software Engineering degree. But some people won't get the same opportunity I have, its lost potential.

A bachelors is (overall) just as useless as a high school diploma.

Damned right you're not. Your politicians suck our gilded cocks, and so will you, you lowly peasant. Be thankful we gave you a loan at all, just so that we can have a few house peasants along with the footpads who tend our gardens and wash our toilets.

The quicker someone makes a decision, the quicker they can learn if it was the right decision for them or not. More importantly, people learn from their mistakes. You arent helping anyone by putting of important decisions. The opposite, in fact.

It's disgusting hearing so many HR firm advertisements.

funny that, i get my hands dirty every day, and the pay is absolutely lousy.
haven't had a good reaction from the people i've asked so far; you can't deny there's an enormous amt of sexism re: job roles. the exceptions are the cucked shittier jobs that no dudes want to do in the first place. i'm a dishwasher right now which is nice because i don't have to care abt anyone's feelings, but shitty because i'm dishwasher. the last job i held for any length of time, also in male dominated industry, i was literally assaulted and my boss fired me in retaliation for speaking up. i can't seem to stick with the girly shit for some reason.

>There is nothing more pathetic than someone with just a high school degree

This is the cause of why anon thinks it's a joke. This is a very modern way of thinking, people used to realize college wasn't for everybody. Now people like you have to pay debnts because they thought they had to go to college and wind up flooding college establishments without a true yearning for education and just want to learn dumb shit or just upgrade to the next level of day care to say to people "Yeah I'm going to school" because they think people like you will judge them for it instead of making a smart and real decision.

Interesting.
Sounds like it isn't that much more expensive than over here, depending on the uni of course.

Sorry to hear that. My mom was one of first women at her job (repairing telecommunications equipment for the now-defunct ASPECT). Despite occasional sexism, she was enormously successful and eventually became a top saleswoman at the company. Dont ever set your sights low. Your life is harder than hers ever was, but I know you can go the distance.

Current college student here, your idea is fucktarded. A large chunk of my peers are still undecided 2 years in, many don't have the first fucking clue about current events/politics besides whatever they get through Facebook/Twitter. Many can't even handle it and drop out (which isn't necessarily bad, some wise up and pick up a trade or do something that's otherwise productive. "Free" college would only exacerbate the current bullshit going on in higher education and would most likely lead to more SJW crybabies who feel that planning things like privilege walks and lgbt parades are more important than pursuing their degrees.

That only works when you have an actual barrier to enterance to higher education. Otherwise, like is the case in the US, it becomes worthless.

Heh, one time in high school we hooked up a bunch of power supplies in series. I think each could pump 240v so we had something fierce wired up. I stupidly grabbed a wire in each hand and accidentally touched the live wire on each side. I was on the floor before I knew it. Seriously glad I didnt die, considering the current went across my arms and though my heart. Still have little burn marks on my pointer fingers from that.

>the paper is more important than what's on it
This is true within certain limits.
Obviously a degree in EE is not the same as a degree in history.
But a degree in EE is almost as good as a degree in CS, CE, or other similar things if you are just looking to get hired by a random company not looking for someone with 30 years of experience.
Of course there are far more jobs that just don't require this kind of higher education, but people subconsciously think those people are worth less because they have less education and they don't want that for their kids.
I think it's normal to have smart people working stupid jobs.
Just because you can go to uni and get a degree and get a job at google or intel doesn't mean you'll be happy.
People run all kinds of shit with barely any education at all.
From supermarkets to restaurants.

There is already practically free college: State assistance to go to a community college.

The discussion about "free education!11" is a joke because everyone assumes you're entitled to an ivy league college - being able to show no credentials whatsoever.
I mean maybe there are some rich kids that get an easy pass - that's not what you should use to set the standard!

Earning credentials is very useful to avoid careless waste of resources.

My electives were all control theory.
Pretty much the classes everyone in EE hated because they were too hard.

yea lets promote going to college now for free and have a even MORE SATURATED APPLICANT POOL WHICH NO ONE WANTS

face it, its a stupid idea
>>
>>79970414
that would only work if high school were worth a crap. in my country we have to give students a national iq test in order to normalize admissions against wildly fluctuting (read: bad) hs standards.
>>
>>79970085
Yeah there are good options for education here. I have imagine the school you went to is much better than a Cal State tier uni for around the same cost, though. A very good student should be able to make it into a private uni and get a great need based financial aid package. Every private school I know of claims they meet 100% of the financial need of a student.
>>
>>79962922

this, colleges now are mostly churning out unemployable crybabies who are allergic to hard work. This is doing nothing to boost productivity and giving the advantage to countries who dont coddle students and fill their minds will bullshit.

Out of interest, what trades can one step into with a high school diploma and make a living? Provided one is truly motivated to pull their own weight?
>>
>>79970765
plenty of people are too smart for the jobs you can get thru 2 year degree but not poor or black enough for a free ride to a 4 year school.
>>
>>79971203
never did a trade but there are camps for software development which work

but with that you have to understand you start off with not the degree level wage and you also have to learn new things constantly to stay viable

as for regular trade: HVAC, welding and probably pest control
>>
>>79971203
Some trades require training or certification, which is usually available at community college. Some will let you into an apprenticeship. Either way, it's comparatively cheap.

It'll still take time to make real money, but you'll have learned a valuable skill instead of analyzing recent history through a black supremacist or feminist lens.
>>
>>79971328
Then 2 years at community, transfer credits to a 4 year school. When taking out loans, remember that you are borrowing against future earnings, ie earning that are supposedly going to be higher after you graduate. If you dont have a plan for earning more after uni and the higher earnings dont exist, then you really reconsider going to college.
>>
>>79970657

It is.
An increase in the number of gay-straight alliances and political malcontents with left leanings doesn't mean there's a chance of a communist coup.
