Japan owned Taiwan much longer than China did.
America was the one that ordered Japan to surrender Taiwan and America used Taiwan as a refuge for the fleeing Nationalists from Mao but under the treaty with Japan, Japan never gave Taiwan to the Nationalists but to America and America also never stated that they were gonna give the rights to Taiwan to the Nationalists and the American Congress at the time never bothered to clarify who really owned Taiwan.
This is why some Taiwanese claim that Taiwan should be the 51st State due to the legal limbo that is Taiwan that America and Japan never bothered clarifying over.
Also, the Dutch owned Taiwan longer than the Mainland Chinese ever did.
Not only that but after the Dutch, Chinese rebels settled on the island and could hardly be called Chinese since they were pirates that exclusively preyed on Mainland China and the dynasty that ruled at the time and didn't follow any of the rules that Mainland China enacted at all.
And finally, after that it was the Japanese that came in control of the island.
