When the Constitution was first sent to the states for ratification, it stalled after 5 states. The main reason given was that it lacked a specific lack of rights, including religious freedom.
A deal was cut where in exchanged for the rest of the states ratifying the Constitution, a "bill of rights" would be immediately passed as constitutional amendments.
In other words... without the bill of rights, including religious freedom, the Constitution would never have been ratified.

Meanwhile the US Department of State website says the first nation to recognition us was France. Which makes a hell of a lot more sense since they actually sent troops and ships to fight fornour independence.
